China smartphone market to overtake U.S. in 2012: research firm

NEW YORK (Reuters) - China will overtake the United States as the world's biggest smartphone market this year, according to research firm IDC, which expects demand to grow for lower-priced smartphones based on Google Inc's Android software.

IDC forecast that China's share of the smartphone market will increase to 26.5 percent this year from 18.3 percent last year, while U.S. market share declines to 17.8 percent from 21.3 percent.

China's sales will be helped by the availability of Android devices priced at $100 or less due to intensifying competition among smartphone vendors, according to IDC. The research firm expects Chinese carriers to help sales by subsidizing phones.

South Korea's Samsung Electronics Co Ltd is the biggest maker of phones using Android around the world and also in the Chinese market. There it is trailed by domestic companies, including Huawei Technologies Co Ltd, ZTE Corp and Lenovo Group Ltd.

In the U.S., growth is expected to slow this year because smartphones already make up the majority of shipments here.

The United Kingdom, the next biggest smartphone market, will trail behind, with a 4.5 percent market share. India's market share is expected to be 2.5 percent in 2012 and will grow to 8.5 percent in 2016.

Romney ready to claim prize, wife to argue case

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) ? Poised at last to claim the prize he's been chasing for years, Mitt Romney barreled into his convention city Tuesday as Republicans worked to showcase him at the Republican National Convention as a man who understands everyday Americans and a leader who can fix the economy.

Ann Romney, the woman who knows him best, said she was tickled that her husband would be on hand for her evening speech to the convention. And tough-talking New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie was ready to make the case in his keynote address for Romney as the right leader to get the economy moving.

"It's going to be fun for him to be there," Mrs. Romney told reporters before touching down in Tampa, where she headed to the convention hall for a microphone check, practicing with a few lines from Lincoln's Gettysburg Address. Running mate Paul Ryan arrived in the convention city, too, still tweaking the speech he'll deliver Wednesday.

But with New Orleans and much of the Gulf Coast waiting fearfully to see where Hurricane Isaac makes landfall, politics became an awkward enterprise and no one knows what sort of party the GOP gathering will turn out to be.

After a one-day weather delay, the convention proceeds according to its latest script: delivering Romney the presidential nomination he fought years to achieve, calling the party to unify around him and setting the stage for the final stretch of the hotly contested campaign to unseat President Barack Obama.

Obama, not one to cede the spotlight, tended to presidential business, urging Gulf Coast residents to prepare for the approaching storm. And then he headed out on a three-state campaign trip focused on winning over college students.

Romney has finalized his own Thursday convention speech, and it will be "a clear vision of a Romney presidency and very much from his heart about America and why he wants to be president and what his presidency would be like," said senior aide Stuart Stevens.

Christie, ready for his keynote address, said that for those Americans who aren't yet sold on Romney, "you start turning it around tonight."

In a round of morning talk-show appearances, Christie said Ann Romney would humanize her husband for the nation, and that his own speech would make the case for Romney's economic credentials. But ultimately, Christie said, it will up to Romney himself "to let the American people see who he is."

Meeting with Michigan delegates, Christie insisted that an effective president trumps likability.

"We need somebody who cares more about getting the job done than they care about being temporarily popular with any particular segment of our country," Christie said.

Christie has his own fan club.

"I just love him," said Sandy Barber, a delegate from rural northwest Ohio. "He's plain-talking. He's himself. He's someone who lets his personality come through."

Romney, Barber allowed, "is a different kind of personality. His personality exudes leadership."

Eager to counter Romney's economic pitch to middle-class voters, a super PAC supporting Obama unveiled an ad featuring a small business owner who criticized the candidate's record on job growth as Massachusetts governor.

Part of the Tampa tableau: a slew of GOP presidential also-rans: Michele Bachmann and Herman Cain posed for a photo after running into each other at the convention center. Cain joked that the caption could be: "We ain't mad. We support Mitt and Ryan." Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum were on hand too, both with speaking slots.

The high campaign season opens with Romney and Obama about even in the last of the pre-convention polls, with each candidate possessing distinct and important advantages. The Democrat is the more likable or empathetic leader; the Republican is more highly regarded as the candidate who can restore the economy, the top issue for voters.

Ann Romney's convention speech was designed to speak to that divide. It was an important part of the GOP's effort to flesh out her husband and present him to the nation as more than a successful businessman and the former Republican governor of a Democratic state, Massachusetts.

She went about the business of humanizing the Romney family with a taped appearance on "CBS This Morning" in which she talked about the pain of a miscarriage, telling details about the experience that were news even to her husband. The Romneys have five sons.

Isaac, which reached hurricane strength Tuesday, skirted Tampa, a big relief for convention organizers worried about the safety of the host city and GOP delegates. But they remain saddled with the question of how to proceed with a political festival ? one devoted both to scoring points against Obama and firing up excitement for Romney ? under the shadow of a dangerous storm crawling toward the Gulf Coast.

Tampa awoke to sunny skies Tuesday while convention planners monitored weather reports for the storm's impact on the Gulf Coast some seven years since Hurricane Katrina devastated the region.

In a reminder of both the storm and the presidency, Obama warned residents of the Gulf Coast to heed warnings from local officials.

Republicans plainly had more at stake in their convention week ? Democrats meet next week in Charlotte, N.C. ? but the Obama campaign also had to recalibrate its tactics as Gulf residents fled their homes or hunkered down. Vice President Joe Biden was called off a Romney-bashing trip to Florida.

That's not to say partisanship has subsided with Isaac's gathering strength. Hardly.

Obama headed to Iowa as the first stop on a campaign trip in which he will make a personal appeal to college voters in three university towns: Ames, Iowa; Fort Collins, Colo.; and Charlottesville, Va.

Awaiting the president in Iowa: An article in the Des Moines Register in which 1996 Republican presidential nominee Bob Dole called Romney and Ryan a "dream ticket."

The two "have a program to turn the economy around that is the most thoughtful and comprehensive I have seen in my lifetime, and I have seen a lot," wrote the 89-year-old Dole.

Los Angeles Major Antonio Villaraigosa, part of the Democratic opposition team in Tampa, said Republican efforts to use Latino speakers at the convention to win over Hispanic voters won't work.

"You can't just trot out a brown face or a Spanish surname and expect people are going to vote for your party or your candidate," he said. " Window dressing doesn't do much for a candidate. It's your policies, your platform."

Polls show Romney trailing badly among Hispanic voters. A Gallup poll taken between July 30 and Aug. 1 found Obama winning 60 percent support among Hispanic voters, and the Republican at 27 percent, little different from 64-29 earlier in the year.

In their August editorial, the PLOS Medicine Editors reflect on a recent Policy Forum article by Jason Corburn and Alison Cohen*, which describes the need for urban health equity indicators to guide public health policy in cities and urban areas. The Editors focus on the need for better air quality data for the world's cities because many cities with the worst airborne particulate levels are in low- and middle-income countries and often have limited data. Worryingly, the World Health Organization estimates that 1.34 million premature deaths were at attributable to outdoor air pollution in 2008.

The Editors note that, "for [air quality] indicators to be effective they must be context-specific and relevant, and be made available transparently so that they can be open to interpretation and re-evaluation."

Exterior Lighting: Energy Efficiency and Style | DirectBuy Home ...

Outdoor lighting fixtures should serve aesthetic and functional purposes for the backyard and front lawn. When talking about exterior lights, efficiency and style are probably the most important features for home owners.

Solar Energy Lighting Options

A great way to minimize the use of electricity for outdoor lighting is to install solar powered lighting fixtures. Small path lights are the most common solar landscape lighting fixtures available today. These compact fixtures are known as stake lights, and they operate completely on solar power. The stake lights are equipped with solar panels and cells that power small LED lightbulbs when darkness settles in. Solar powered lights eliminate any electrical wiring and they can be easily placed and removed anywhere in the ground. Solar stake lights may offer enough illumination all night long, as the charged solar cells can power the low watt LED light bulbs for up to ten hours.

Timers For Outdoor Lights

Another trick for saving money on exterior lighting costs is to install timers. Mechanical timers can be physically hardwired to multiple outdoor lighting fixtures that are powered by traditional electrical wires. The timers can be set to turn the landscape lights on and off at certain times. Many outdoor timers have heavy duty protective housings that can withstand tough conditions including precipitation.

Motion Sensors In Exterior Lights

Motion sensing technology allows for efficient use of outdoor lights. Motion sensors are commonly integrated into lighting fixtures that are mounted onto a garage or the entrance door of a home. The sensors have a functional range of dozens of feet, so they will turn on the lights as a car pulls up a driveway or as a person walks towards the entry door. Motion detector lights significantly use less energy because they are literally turned on only for several minutes. Depending on the brand, motion sensor outdoor lights are usually programmed to turn off a few minutes after detecting movement. Such outdoor lights should be tested to ensure that they actually detect movement and that they are mounted at the correct angle on the garage awning or home exterior wall.

Adding Aesthetic Appeal With Outdoor Lights

Outdoor lighting fixtures can add plenty of appeal to a home?s property because they are available in an array of styles. The lantern design is one of the most popular styles of outdoor lights. Lanterns can be either mounted to an exterior wall or supported by a free standing post that is secured to the ground. Lantern lights are typically made from durable metals such as iron, bronze, die-cast aluminum, steel, and other alloys. The metallic frame of the lantern is carved with intricate patterns and textures that provide classic appeal.

Outdoor lanterns have transparent or frosted type glass housings that may support a variety of light bulbs that vary in wattage rating, size, and illumination technology such as LED and CFL. The transparency of the glass housing will determine how much light will diffuse through. Lantern lighting fixtures are designed to provide plenty of illumination from a height, unlike the smaller path lights. The post style lantern fixtures are miniature versions of street lights commonly installed in busy urban settings. Such outdoor lights add plenty of sophistication to a homeowner?s property.

Cool And Fun Outdoor Lights

Novelty outdoor lights can add plenty of cool and fun character to your garden and front lawn. Novelty lights are available in a variety of interesting themes, and they are not reserved just for holiday use. Some novelty lights can be mounted onto exterior walls while others can hang off strings such as holiday lights.

When installing outdoor lighting fixtures, try to create the right balance between energy efficiency and style. Solar power, motion sensors, and timers can save you plenty of money on powering your outdoor lights.

Egypt reopens Gaza border crossing for passengers

(AP) ? An Egyptian security official says Egypt has reopened its passenger terminal with the Gaza Strip and resumed normal operations there after nearly three weeks of disruption following a deadly attack on Egyptian soldiers by Islamic militants.

The official said from inside the Rafah crossing that it will be open six days a week, with normal security measures. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to brief reporters.

The closure of the terminal raised tensions between Egypt's Islamist President Mohammed Morsi, of the Muslim Brotherhood, and Gaza's ruling Hamas, which had hoped Morsi would end the enclave's five-year isolation.

Egypt shut down the terminal after 16 Egyptian soldiers were shot dead by masked gunmen while breaking their fast during the holy month of Ramadan on Aug. 5.

A year on, Northeast towns struggle after Hurricane Irene

QUECHEE, Vermont (Reuters) - When Hurricane Irene's torrential rains transformed the sleepy Ottauquechee River into a roaring wall of gray-green water a year ago, the Simon Pearce glass and pottery gallery's future was in doubt.

Located in a renovated woolen mill on a narrow gap by the river, flood waters surged 25 feet above normal, filling the bottom two floors of one of Vermont's most popular tourist attractions. It destroyed more than $200,000 in blown glass vases and tableware and wiped out a 3,000-bottle wine cellar for the gallery's restaurant.

On top of that, Irene washed out a covered bridge that was the gallery's main link to the state highway that brought most of Simon Pearce's 300,000 annual visitors.

"It was a triple, quadruple whammy," says Andrew Pearce, director of special projects at the gallery and son of its eponymous founder, of the flood that caused $3 million in damages to the business. "So much of my dad's work was washed down the river in an afternoon. You can sit around and mope or roll up your sleeves and start shoveling."

As Hurricane Isaac threatens to hit Florida, many on the East Coast are still struggling to recover a year after Hurricane Irene.

Once the storm made landfall in North Carolina on August 27, it moved north to deluge the Northeast, causing 40 deaths and an estimated $10 billion in damage to homes, roads and other infrastructure as far north as Maine and Quebec.

Though doomsday forecasts of the hurricane hitting downtown Philadelphia or flooding New York's subway never occurred, Vermont and parts of upstate New York were hard-hit, suffering the worst flooding in more than eight decades.

In Margaretville, New York, a village 140 miles north of New York City that sits in a valley in the Catskill Mountains, a street festival had just finished when it began raining. Hours later floodwaters from a branch of the Delaware River, strong enough to carry giant round hay bales, surged down the Main Street, destroying virtually the entire business district of the 700-person town.

REBUILDING

The town's supermarket has reopened, but other businesses such as the local pub and a CVS drug store are being rebuilt, says Peter Molnar, a local innkeeper. The water crested eight feet above street level in one of Molnar's downtown lodgings, though he's repaired the damages with the help of a $30,000 grant from a local economic development agency.

"We're about 90 percent back," he said of the town. "We've seen the worst of Mother Nature and since then we've seen the best of human nature."

In Rochester, Vermont, a quiet brook that ran through a 200-year old cemetery burst its banks and tore through graves, scattering parts of about three dozen bodies up to three miles away and littering the main highway with remains.

A volunteer group of local funeral directors worked for a week to help restore the remains while local fire departments hauled in new caskets with off-road vehicles and groups of volunteers guarded the cemetery at night, says Thomas Harty, a funeral director from nearby Randolph, Vermon, who oversaw the work.

The task was complicated by the fact that a number of the remains carried away had been buried in an unmarked pauper's grave. Today remains of 23 bodies have been temporarily interred in concrete vaults while repairs to the cemetery continue, and unidentifiable remains are still being cataloged and occasionally uncovered.

"I never want to do it again," says Hardy, of the cleanup job. "For some years to come I anticipate we'll continue to make minor discoveries. Some hunter, some fisherman, some homeowner working along the back of their fields will make a discovery and we'll get a call."

At Simon Pearce, a crew of 30 employees spent two weeks working 11-hour days just to clear the debris from rooms filled with as much as five feet of mud. They dug out enough dirt and debris to fill 27 dump trucks and load two logging trucks with scrap metal.

With the help of $2.5 million in state and federal loans, Simon Pearce's parking lot is again filled with New York and Massachusetts license plates, and crowds gather to watch a half dozen artisans blow glass vases in a workshop that was filled to its ceiling with water a year ago.

"We used to use the saying ?come hell or high water,'" says Pearce. "Now we leave out the high water part."

Egyptian stable after protest self-immolation

An Egyptian man was reported to be in stable condition after he set fire to himself on Saturday outside the presidential palace in Cairo to protest against losing his job, police officials said.

The employee at a state-owned electricity company had won a court ruling to get back his job, but the company ignored the verdict. He doused himself in petrol and set himself alight as a last resort, the officials said.

The protest did not appear related to a sit-in outside the palace in northern Cairo by activists who oppose President Mohamed Morsi, the country's first Islamist and civilian president.

In a statement, the presidency expressed its "regret" at the man's self-immolation, the official MENA news agency reported.

Such acts had been rare in Egypt before several men set fire to themselves in January and February 2011 in protest against then president Hosni Mubarak, after a Tunisian street vendor's self-immolation prompted a revolution in Tunisia.

Mubarak was overthrown in a popular uprising that ushered in military rule and Morsi's election last June.

Marquee Marquis: The Queen of Versailles | Movie Reviews and More

Hello, TLC? I have a TV show to pitch you...

?

Grade: B +

Director: Lauren Greenfield

MPAA Rating: PG

Running Time: 1 hr. 40 min.

The most devious trick pulled by The Queen of Versailles is that it spends a good half-hour convincing you it?s the one thing that it ultimately isn?t: grist for the milled masses foraging for any morsel of schadenfreude at the expense of the 1%. And talk about the perfect vehicle: mega-rich real estate magnate David Siegel and his ex-model turned trophy wife Jackie are busy living the elite life and constructing their 90,000 square-foot dream house in Orlando that goes by the working name Versailles, what would be America?s largest private home.

The year is 2007, and David is owner of Westgate Resorts, a real estate firm he started out of his garage that grew to the largest privately held time-share company in the world. David brags about delivering Florida for George W. Bush in the 2000 election and bankrolls beauty pageants seemingly so he can scan its contestants for candidates to be the next Mrs. Siegel. Most of all, he is sinking much of his wealth into construction of his most lavish resort, the 52-story PH Towers Westgate in Las Vegas.

Jackie, a 40-something former beauty queen 31 years David?s junior, whiles away her days shopping and hobnobbing. Outsourcing care of the couple?s eight children and four dogs to her house staff of 19, Jackie excitedly monitors both her Botox injections and the progress of Versailles, including the glut of adornments imported to decorate the mammoth manse.

What starts as a cinematic study of Versailles? singular extravagance?in all senses of the word?morphs into something more profound once the subprime mortgage crisis hits and the housing bubble bursts. With director and renowned photographer Lauren Greenfield, and her cameras, returning for several days every few months, we bear witness to the gradual yet precipitous erosion of the Siegels? fortunes, notably David?s stubborn refusal to relinquish PH Towers, now a financial sinkhole, and the devolving of Versailles from a burgeoning oasis to an overgrown, unfinished derelict.

The Siegels? overindulgence, spearheaded by Jackie?s dizzy bliss, is foisted for farcical scorn during their mid-aughts heyday. The characters are framed in basic terms: David, while boorish, is also a self-made man and American success story, while Jackie is the superficial gold digger. As the Siegels? luck changes, however, so too does the portraits of our leads. David becomes withdrawn and surly, simultaneous with the audience?s ironic realization that his fortune is built on a foundation of real estate speculation, selling pipe dreams to working-class couples who ?want to vacation like a Rockefeller.? Meanwhile, Jackie surprisingly doubles down on the devotion to her family. She?ll never win any awards for Mom (or Wife or Employer or Pet Owner) of the Year, but Jackie?who grew up a poor kid in New York State?stands by her man under circumstances in which true trophy wives would dart for their divorce attorney.

There?s an intelligence and symmetry to Greenfield?s presentation that elevates The Queen of Versailles beyond a simple derision of rank economic excess. There?s the eye-opening parallel between David and his father, both men who ultimately squandered their fortunes in the sands of Vegas (David on high-rises, dad at the gambling tables). And there?s the film-ending imagery of fireworks exploding in the night sky over Disney World, shot through an empty window frame at Versailles, a callback to a throwaway remark by Jackie earlier in the film explaining why the window was placed in that spot to begin with.

Indeed, Greenfield won Best Documentary Directing honors at the Sundance Film Festival last January. But while Jackie attended the film?s premiere, David was suing Greenfield and Sundance for defamation. The legal basis for suit?ably chronicled in a June 2012 article in The New York Times by Joe Nocera?appears flimsy. But David?s complaint does give pause over some of Greenfield?s process. His gripe that certain scenes are shown out of context or strict chronological order in order to amplify dramatic effect is common to all strata of filmmaking, including documentary. On the hand, while Greenfield denies that she encouraged Jackie to rent a stretch limousine for a lunch outing to McDonald?s (one of the film?s signature scenes), she admits that much of David?s anxiety during their last visit to the Siegels? home in late 2011 was due to his desire for the film crew to leave, not depression over his financial and family situation as the movie leads you to believe.

Still, there?s no equivocating the squalor of David?s TV room, where he secludes himself a la Howard Hughes during the film?s latter stages, desperately divining a solution to his wealth woes. Moreover, there?s rarely been a more provocative juxtaposition of haves and have-nots than when a now cash-strapped Jackie is forced to do her Christmas shopping at Wal-Mart but?in an act of cockeyed defiance?brings along her housekeeper and buys enough merchandise to fill several shopping carts. While she may not reign over Versailles, this queen isn?t ready to abdicate her throne.

Mayan collapse mystery solved? Deforestation exacerbated a drought

Mayan collapse: One new study blames the collapse of the Mayan empire on deforestation combined with drought. Environmental and trade problems caused the Mayan collapse, says another new study.

Two new studies examine the reasons for the collapse of the Mayan culture, finding the Mayans themselves contributed to the downfall of the empire.?

Scientists have found that drought played a key role, but the Mayans appear to have exacerbated the problem by cutting down the jungle canopy to make way for cities and crops, according to researchers who used climate-model simulations to see how much deforestation aggravated the drought.

RECOMMENDED: Are you scientifically literate? Take the quiz

"We're not saying deforestation explains the entire drought, but it does explain a substantial portion of the overall drying that is thought to have occurred," said the study's lead author Benjamin Cook, a climate modeler at Columbia University's Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory and the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies, in a statement. [Dry and Dying: Images of Drought]

Using climate-model simulations, he and his colleagues examined how much the switch from forest to crops, such as corn, would alter climate. Their results, detailed online in the journal Geophysical Research Letters, suggested that when deforestation was at its maximum, it could account for up to 60 percent of the drying. (The switch from trees to corn reduces the amount of water transferred from the soil to the atmosphere, which reduces rainfall.)

Other recent research takes a more holistic view.

"The ninth-century collapse and abandonment of the Central Maya Lowlands in the Yucat?n peninsular region were the result of complex human?environment interactions," writes this team in a study published Monday (Aug 20) in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Amateurs show off Hubble's hidden gems

In this video from the European Hubble team, Joe Liske (aka Dr J) presents the winners of the "Hidden Treasures" image-processing competition.

By Alan Boyle

The team behind the Hubble Space Telescope has transformed our view of the universe through iconic images such as the Pillars of Creation and the Cat's Eye, but even the professionals can miss some gems?? as demonstrated by today's winners of the "Hubble's Hidden Treasures" contest.

The contest, which had its kickoff in March, invited members of the public to sort through more than 700,000 archived images from the space telescope and come up with pictures that have never before been put in the spotlight. The results illustrate how today's software is making it easier for amateur astronomers to do professional-level work.

The Hidden Treasures contest is sponsored by the folks at the European Space Agency's Hubble headquarters in Garching, Germany. Nearly 3,000 photo submissions were received, in two categories. One category was reserved for folks who used color compositing and other image-processing techniques to bring out the best in the Hubble imagery. The other was for folks who spotted great pictures in the archive, but didn't fully process the images themselves.

Ten winners were selected in each category and will receive prizes ranging from Hubble posters to Apple gadgets and autographs from "Hubble-hugging" astronaut John Grunsfeld.

Double-winner
The top winner in the image-processing category, as well as the "People's Choice" competition, is Josh Lake, a 34-year-old physics and astronomy teacher (and volleyball coach) at Pomfret School in Connecticut. Lake told me he was "really surprised and happy" to learn that he was a winner.

"We have our own observatory here, so I've been teaching students to do processing for the past five years or so," he said.

The fact that he won the People's Choice online contest might not have been so surprising, considering that he could enlist students and alumni, family and friends to vote for his picture of the star-forming region NGC 1763. "I was totally blown away to find out that I had won the jury prize, too" Lake said.

Lake said that image processing is "something that I love doing," but it sounds as if he won't be giving up his teaching job for a career in astronomical image processing anytime soon. "I think I would really miss the students and this community," he said. "It'd be a tough lifestyle to break out of, and just go to a 9-to-5 job sitting in front of a computer. ... The work here is hard, but it's life-changing."

Here's hoping that Lake's image-building feat will be life-changing as well. To get a sense of how he did it, check out this three-minute time-lapse video of the process, and then feast your eyes on the finished product:

A time-lapse video shows how Josh Lake transformed data from the Hubble Legacy Archive into a prize-winning picture of the star-forming region known as NGC 1763, using software tools including PixInsight and Photoshop. Music by Sigur Ros: Gobbledigook

NASA / ESA / Josh Lake

Josh Lake submitted a stunning image of NGC 1763, part of the N11 star-forming region in the Large Magellanic Cloud. ESA/Hubble had previously published an image of an area just adjacent to this, based on observations by the same team. Josh took a different approach, producing a bold two-color image that contrasts the light from glowing hydrogen and nitrogen. The image is not in natural colors ? hydrogen and nitrogen produce almost indistinguishable shades of red light that our eyes would struggle to tell apart ? but Josh's processing separates them out into blue and red, dramatically highlighting the structure of the region. As well as narrowly topping the jury's vote, Josh Lake also won the public vote.

Here are a few more of the contest winners, with comments from the European Hubble team. For links to all 20 images, check out the European Hubble site's "Hidden Treasures" announcement.

NASA / ESA / Andre van der Hoeven

Andre van der Hoeven of the Netherlands came a close second in the jury vote. His image of the spiral galaxy Messier 77 is highly attractive, and is also an impressive piece of image processing, combining a number of datasets from separate instruments into one amazing picture.

NASA / ESA / Judy Schmidt

Judy Schmidt of the United States entered several highly accomplished images into the competition. Her picture of XZ Tauri, a newborn star spraying out gas into its surroundings and lighting up a nearby cloud of dust, was the jury's favorite - and won third place in the image-processing contest. This was a challenging dataset to process, as Hubble only captured two colors in this area. Nevertheless, the end result is an attractive image, and an unusual object that we would never have found without her help

NASA / ESA / Brian Campbell

Brian Campbell's picture of NGC 6300 won first prize in the basic image-searching category.

NASA / ESA / Budeanu Cosmin Mirel

Budeanu Cosmin Mirel won the public vote in the basic image-searching category with a picture of NGC 4100.

S.Africa court hears charges against 259 in mine unrest

The 259 men arrested after a deadly police crackdown at a South African platinum mine heard charges Monday ranging from murder to public violence, in the first court hearing from the tragedy.

All the men, except one who is hospitalised, were brought in groups before the court in the Pretoria township of Ga-Rankuwa to hear the charges. Their next hearing was set for August 27.

Magistrate Esau Bodigelo remanded all the men in custody. An exact breakdown of all the charges was not immediately available, with proceedings being translated into several languages.

On Thursday police opened fire on hundreds of armed workers on a wildcat strike at Lonmin's Marikana platinum mine, leaving 34 dead and 78 wounded in the bloodiest day of protest since apartheid.

Police and the independent police watchdog have both opened separate investigations into the killings. In addition President Jacob Zuma has announced a judicial commission of enquiry into the tragedy.

Police convoys with armoured vehicles brought the accused from prisons across the region to the court, where a group of around 100 people cheered as they arrived.

The group of mostly women brandished placards with slogans such as "Release the innocent workers".

The accused appeared before a packed courtroom, with half the public gallery cordoned off with police tape and armed officers.

Air Force begins using Boeing surveillance satellite

The U.S. Air Force on Monday said it would begin operational use of a new Boeing Co surveillance satellite built to monitor debris and other satellites in space ? nearly two years after the satellite was first launched.

Air Force Space Command said the new Space Based Surveillance Satellite system had achieved its initial level of capability and was ready to support U.S. military requirements after a delay linked to a piece of electronics on board.

The system is the only space-based sensor capable of detecting and monitoring debris, satellites and other space objects without disruptions from weather, atmospheric factors or the time of day that can limit ground-based systems.

"This improved access to observe orbiting objects significantly enhances the ability to provide timely, critical information so desperately needed to support warfighter decision making," the Air Force said in a statement.

When the satellite was launched in September 2010, Boeing predicted it would be ready to perform its mission within 60 days, but its "initial operational capability" was delayed by problems with some onboard electronics.

The problem occurred when the satellite traveled through the South Atlantic Anomaly, an area where the Earth's magnetic field is weakest and orbiting satellites are exposed to higher than usual levels of radiation.

The Air Force began implementing a fix for the issue in May, followed by successful software testing that allowed it to start using the satellite.

The new satellite will help the military better track other satellites in space and thousands of bits of debris that could pose a risk to spacecraft.
