I met with a financial consultant who told me that the 401k is the last thing I should start. She says it makes more sense to open the whole life which compounds 8% return on my money yearly and pays a yearly dividend. Which is smarter to do first?

Life insurance plans that builds up a cash value like whole life, universal life, et cetera are rarely the best choice. Romantic crooner Tony Martin dies at 98

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Tony Martin, the romantic singer who appeared in movie musicals from the 1930s to the 1950s and sustained a career in records, television and nightclubs from the Depression era into the 21st century, has died. He was 98.

Martin died of natural causes Friday evening at his West Los Angeles home, his friend and accountant Beverly Scott said Monday.

A peer of Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra, Martin sang full voice in a warm baritone that carried special appeal for his female audience. Among his hit recordings were "I Get Ideas," ''To Each His Own," ''Begin the Beguine" and "There's No Tomorrow."

"He's the ultimate crooner who outlasted all is contemporaries," musician and longtime friend Gabriel Guerrero said from his Oregon home. Martin recently sang to Guerrero over the telephone.

"He has truly remained the butterscotch baritone until he was 98," Guerrero added.

Although he never became a full-fledged movie star, he was featured in 25 films, most of them made during the heyday of the Hollywood musicals. A husky 6 feet tall and dashingly handsome, he was often cast as the romantic lead.

He also married two movie musical superstars, Alice Faye and Cyd Charisse, and the latter union lasted 60 years, until her death in 2008.

Martin found his escape through music while growing up in San Francisco and Oakland amid a poor, close-knit Russian Jewish family, enduring taunts and slights from gentile classmates.

"I always sang," he wrote. "I always played some instrument or other, real or imagined. ... At first, of course, my music was just for my own fun. I didn't recognize it right away as my passport away from poverty."

Performing on radio led to his break into the film business. His first singing role came in the 1936 "Sing Baby Sing," which starred future wife Faye and introduced the Ritz Brothers to the screen as a more frenetic version of the Marx Brothers.

As a contract player at Twentieth Century-Fox, Martin also appeared in "Pigskin Parade" (featuring young Judy Garland), "Banjo on My Knee" (Barbara Stanwyck, Joel McCrea) "Sing and Be Happy," ''You Can't Have Everything" (Faye, Don Ameche) "Ali Baba Goes to Town" (comedian Eddie Cantor) and "Sally, Irene and Mary."

In 1940 he shifted to MGM and sang in such films as "The Ziegfeld Girl" (James Stewart, Lana Turner, Judy Garland), "The Big Store" (the Marx Brothers), "Till the Clouds Roll By," ''Easy to Love" (Esther Williams) and "Deep in My Heart."

In 1948, he produced and starred in "Casbah," a well-received film musical version of "Algiers" with a fine score by Harold Arlen and Leo Robin. He made singing tours of Europe and had a yearly contract at London's Palladium.

Martin had fallen in love with Faye while at Fox, where she was one of the studio's biggest stars. Married in 1937, the newlyweds were considered one of Hollywood's handsomest couples. But the marriage eroded because of career conflicts and his distaste for becoming known as Mr. Alice Faye. They divorced after two years.

Martin met Charisse, then a rising dance star at MGM, when they were dinner partners at a party given by their mutual agent. Just returned from the war, Martin was busy greeting old friends and paid her little attention.

They didn't meet until a year later, when the persistent agent arranged another date. This time they clicked, and they married in 1948. She had a son Nicky, born of her first marriage to dance director Nico Charisse. She gave birth to Tony Jr. in 1950.

Charisse became a star at MGM during the 1950s, dancing with Fred Astaire in "The Band Wagon" and "Silk Stockings" and Gene Kelly in "Singin' in the Rain" and "Brigadoon."

In later years, Martin and Charisee put out a 1976 double autobiography, "The Two of Us," and often toured in a singing and dancing shows. He continued appearances into his 90s, his voice only slightly tarnished by time.

"His voice is more or less intact," a New York Times critic wrote when he appeared at a New York club in early 2008. "Time has certainly taken its toll. He no longer belts. ... But the essential Tony Martin sound was still discernible."

Martin was born Dec. 25, 1913. His parents divorced when he was an infant.

"I was a Christmas present in a family that didn't believe in Christmas," Martin wrote. "The name they gave me when I was born on Christmas Day, 1913, was Alvin Morris. Tony Martin wasn't born for a long time after that."

He attended St. Mary's College of California, where he and other students formed a popular jazz combo, The Five Red Peppers. After college, he formed Al Morris and His Orchestra, and played in San Francisco nightclubs like the Chez Paree, often appearing on late-night national radio.

MGM chief Louis B. Mayer heard the bandleader sing "Poor Butterfly" on radio and ordered a screen test. It was a failure, but an agent landed Morris a contract at RKO, where he got a new name. He had enjoyed the music of Freddie Martin at the Coconut Grove, so he borrowed the name. "Tony" came from a magazine story.

His career at RKO was notable for a one-line bit in the 1936 "Follow the Fleet," which starred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. He had better luck at Fox, but nightclubbing every night with a succession of film beauties detracted from his work.

"I was so busy having fun that I didn't even learn my lines," he admitted in 1955. "I muffed a wonderful chance, and that was the end of me for a while."

World War II brought the one big scandal in his life. He enlisted in the Navy in 1941 and was given a specialist ranking. A year later, a Navy officer who facilitated Martin's enlistment was court-martialed, accused of accepting a $950 automobile from him. The singer was not charged but was dismissed from the Navy for unfitness. He asked his draft board for immediate induction into the Army and served three years in Asia.

The scandal lingered over Martin's head after the war, but he managed to rebuild his career with radio, films, personal appearances and records.

He is survived by stepson Nico Charisse.

Hillside Memorial Park in Culver City was handling funeral arrangements.

?I was probably smoking $1,200 a day and playing pro football at the same time,? he said. ?How my heart didn?t burst, I can?t tell you that.?

He cleaned himself up enough to get a truck driving job, but stopped in Fort Worth to buy drugs, parked his truck and never saw it again, and then walked into the Salvation Army because he had no place else to go.

?I figured I?d blow off a couple days here,? he said. ?But to be inside from the elements consistently for the first time in years, it gave me the belief that I could do this. I could get my life back.?

Now, he?s helping others on his old path, working as a bus driver, raising a 4-year-old daughter and helping at the shelter that was once his home.

?I look back over my life now and say I?ve really been blessed,? he said. ?I?m not perfect, but I thank God I?m not where I used to be.?

It?s the kind of story that resonates at any time, but in the month of arrests leading up to NFL training camps, it?s worth repeating now.

The age of fossil fuels has changed the oceans dramatically. What many might not know is that the oceans absorb about one-third of all human-caused carbon dioxide emissions. And while this has saved us from even more rapid climate change, few people realize the true effect this has had on our seas. The recent heat waves, droughts, floods and super derechos are only a fraction of the extreme weather we could expect to see if the oceans weren?t around to help us out.

The absorption of carbon dioxide from fossil fuels has substantially altered the ocean?s basic chemistry. In the hundred plus years since the Industrial Revolution, ocean waters have become, on average, 30 percent more acidic. Ocean acidification, or ?osteoporosis of the sea? as some are calling it, threatens animals like oysters, mussels, clams, corals and tiny marine snails called pteropods that use calcium carbonate to form their protective shells and skeletons. But it?s not only the small animals that are affected. Rising ocean acidity levels pose substantial threats to marine biodiversity, fisheries, food security and marine tourism. The last time similar changes in the ocean?s chemistry happened more than 200 million years ago, 95 percent of marine life went extinct.

The alarms are sounding. Last week, 2,600 top marine scientists signed a consensus statement urging immediate action to limit greenhouse gas emissions in order to save coral reefs and the people who depend on them. But time and again these warnings result in zero action, and the public is still largely unaware of the issue. Because we live on land and don?t experience these chemical changes directly, scientists have had difficulty illustrating what ocean acidification actually looks like ? until now.

If you keep watching over time, the graphic shows more and more red, almost like there are flames slowly engulfing our coastline. Situation Awareness: A Training Paradox | Diver Magazine

Experts agree: situation awareness is critically important to diver safety. But because it?s regarded as an advanced skill gained through experience it?s not included in the entry-level diver-training curriculum. As the complexity of recreational and tec/rec diving activities and equipment continue to increase, does this critical contradiction become a paradox we can no longer ignore.

Situation awareness (SA), or situational awareness in diving circles, is ?knowing what is going on around you?, according to an expert view in Theoretical Underpinnings of Situation Awareness: A Critical Review. More precisely it?s the ?perception of the elements in the environment within a volume of time and space, the comprehension of their meaning and the projection of their status in the near future,? according to the authors of Design and Evaluation for Situation Awareness Enhancement. Operators in rigorous, data intensive vocations such as military combat and flying air (and space) craft have long understood that effective SA plays a vital role in making accurate decisions. Every diver would be served well to understand this too.

?SA plays a big part in the dive and dive planning,? says Chief Petty Officer Second Class Rob DeProy, Chief Diver for the Mine Countermeasures Department at the Royal Canadian Navy?s Fleet Diving Unit (Pacific). ?With good SA the dive team can plan for such things as current, low visibility and potential failures in-water.? DeProy believes that SA is equally important in the recreational realm because sport divers lack the considerable ?SA-boosting? resources available to Navy divers such as surface support and reliable communications gear.

Information Overload?
Indeed, today?s divers are presented with an overwhelming amount of information to process during each trip into the ?unforgiving alien world,? as DeProy describes the aquatic environment. They must practice the cornerstone precepts of diving safety: breathe always ? never hold your breath, equalize early and often, ascend slowly. They must be acutely aware of their surroundings in three dimensions. They must continually monitor their depth, time and decompression status, more often than not using a dive computer or computers that present them with a large amount of data on a tiny screen. They must track the status of their buddy. And they must do all this while breathing compressed gas from an intricate piece of equipment while remaining constantly vigilant for signs of physiological perils such as narcosis, decompression sickness and cold. Good SA allows divers to perceive useful information, comprehend its importance and project possible future outcomes, therefore enabling effective decision making.

?I think the most important thing that you can train experienced divers to do is to work on projection and contingency planning skills,? says Dr. Mica R. Endsley, president of SA Technologies. Acknowledged as a world leader in the study of SA, Endsley told DIVER that, ?People with the highest levels of SA, in every domain we have studied, are those who spend their time projecting ahead to what could possibly happen or go wrong and to figure out in advance what they would do in that situation. ?It makes decision making under often very stressful conditions much easier and much faster,? she said. ?Even experienced divers who panic or don?t think ahead can get into trouble quickly,? she notes, adding, ?This is a quite trainable skill that can be taught and reinforced during training and regular dives.?

Training and Experience
The importance of SA for divers seems obvious, but can it really be taught? Ocean Quest Dive Centre?s Greg McCracken, a PADI Course Director and DSAT Technical Instructor Trainer, thinks that SA should be introduced to entry level divers. ?It?s a very important aspect of diving and it may also be one of the most difficult skills to acquire,? he said. McCracken feels that in order to develop SA, divers need to follow a specific training path and gain experience. ?Both are essential,? he emphasizes.

So, the paradox: SA provides concrete benefits for improving diver safety while remaining a maddeningly intangible skill, seemingly beyond the reach of the entry-level diver. It?s true that some implicit awareness of the situation is a required part of entry-level scuba training. In order to maintain contact with a buddy, there must be awareness of his or her whereabouts. There must be an awareness of the submersible pressure gauge (SPG) dial to avoid running out of breathing gas, etc. However, no entry-level students are trained how to collect, evaluate, plan and act in an organized way on all of the disparate pieces of information presented during a dive.

General Principles

Gavin Wuttken, Diving Safety Officer at the Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium in Tacoma, Washington, also believes that entry level divers should receive instruction in SA and its general principles, and must, ?Be evaluated in confined and open water on their ability to recognize, evaluate and act, based on data gathered.?? He focuses his students? thinking about SA by asking them after a dive to recall details about physiology, equipment, environmental conditions, animal behaviour and contingency planning. Such an approach is simple and intuitive, and reinforces the divers? attention to detail on subsequent dives. This ?recall? exercise strengthens the framework for data acquisition and evaluation. He also thinks that the study of SA should continue through dive certification levels where it can be explored more deeply with a ?stronger emphasis and evaluation on probability/contingency planning.?

Although SA is not presented as a stand-alone topic in the PADI Open Water Diver course, Randy Giles, Regional Manager for PADI Canada, agrees it is an important component of any diver-training course. ?Whether integrated into a scuba diving course curriculum or pulled out as a separate topic within that curriculum, SA remains an important part of the diver safety toolkit and is a critical topic of discourse that we should continue to encourage,? Giles says.

SA Demons
Identifying how Endsley?s so-called SA demons, discussed in her co-authored book Designing for Situation Awareness: An approach to User Centered Design, affect new divers, and developing exercises to address them, may be a useful starting point for integration of focused SA training into the mainstream entry-level diver curriculum. For instance, one SA Demon is ?attentional tunneling?, or fixating on one set of information to the exclusion of others. To combat this tendency in new divers, perhaps the ubiquitous ?breathe always, never hold your breath? mantra could become ?breathe always, never hold your breath and always look around?. In other words, if new divers are asked to incorporate into their mental routine a phrase that reminds them that not holding their breath will reduce their chance of experiencing a devastating lung-over pressure injury, then why not also include one that will increase their chance of making the right decision during a stressful event? Wuttken?s straightforward recall exercise also tackles attentional tunneling by prompting divers to consider a wide array of dive data, and data overload, by helping divers identify useful rather than extraneous information.

Modifying the entry level curriculum to deal with these SA demons could be a useful strategy for strengthening the integration of SA into everyday diving activities, especially for that majority of divers who never progress past the basic certification. Understanding the foundation theory of SA is a useful pursuit for the advanced practitioner, but it is the dissemination and implementation of clear and simple techniques that will inoculate the new diver with SA. In turn, SA will improve the safety of diving in general, just as it has done for a host of other complex occupations.

Situational Awareness Demons ?

• Attentional tunneling: fixating on one set of information to the exclusion of others.
• Requisite memory trap: relying on limited short-term (working) memory.
• Stressors: some stressors reduce the capacity to process information.
• Data overload: overwhelming amounts of data can reduce SA.
• Misplaced salience: Flashing red lights can be useful. Or not.
• Complexity creep: systems with too many features make it difficult to develop an accurate mental model of how the system works.
• Errant mental model: use of the wrong mental model leads to misinterpretation of information.
• Out-of-the-loop syndrome: automation can undermine SA.

Has the business community lost the ethical plot? Over the past two decades successive boom and bust cycles have thrown up extraordinary examples of ethical failure. First, the dot.com era in the United States produced scandals at Enron, WorldCom, Tyco International, Qwest, HealthSouth and sundry others. Andersen, one of the big five global audit firms, disintegrated when the U.S. Department of Justice investigated its audit failures at Enron.

In the first decade of the new millennium Europe saw fraud at Parmalat, where the U.S. and European investment banks turned out to have connived in concealing the Italian dairy company's dire financial plight. Royal Dutch Shell, once regarded as a beacon of ethical solidity, was found to have cooked the books by inflating its production reserves. Volkswagen was beset by charges of bribery and corruption, while Siemens ran into trouble with the U.S. Foreign Corrupt Practices Act.

Then in the protracted financial crisis that began in 2007 the behavior of U.S. banks in the subprime mortgage market was shown to have been outrageously rapacious towards borrowers, while retail banking in Europe was marred by a succession of mis-selling scandals?the financial world's pet euphemism for ripoffs. Fraud charges have been brought against senior executives of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, the big U.S. semi-official mortgage institutions. Goldman Sachs, the world's preeminent investment bank, has been exposed by a departing senior executive in an article in the New York Times as being hell-bent on fleecing its clients, which Goldman bankers referred to as muppets. It had earlier paid $550 million to settle a case brought by the Securities and Exchange Commission for misleading investors without admitting or denying wrongdoing.

In China the falsification of company accounts has turned into an epidemic, leaving auditors unable to form an opinion. The Japanese company Olympus provided one more example of concealment of losses. All of this took place against the background of top executives' pay spiraling to unprecedented levels regardless of corporate performance. In banking the bonuses continued even after the banks were the recipients of the greatest bailout in financial history. Finance was at the epicenter of ethical failure.

Incentive structures are at odds with the requirements of decent ethics.

It has to be acknowledged, then, that the environment into which the Robin Cosgrove prize for innovative ideas in finance was launched was more than a little challenging. How can this be rationalized? Some argue that these ethical aberrations were simply a reflection of the business cycle. When times are good and share prices soar, ethical standards tend to drop as people become greedy and succumb to temptation. When companies fail in the bad times and fraud is exposed, moral standards are reemphasized. Yet there is surely more to it than that.

I would argue that there has been a secular decline in ethical standards. In part this stems from the change from a world of heavily regulated and cartelized markets, in which managers enjoyed paternalistic power with relatively little accountability, to one of liberalized markets in which greater emphasis is placed on shareholder value. Chief executives are now in a capital-market pressure cooker, with fund managers and analysts becoming ever more vocal in their demands for value. Their definition of value is narrowly financial. Together with the requirement for quarterly reporting, this has bred a hitting-the-numbers culture, with attendant temptations for executives to cook the books to meet capital market demands.

This spur to short-termism has been compounded by the growth of performance-related or equity-type incentives, whether in the form of conventional bonuses or stock option rewards. The metrics used to calculate these performance-related rewards are mainly such crude yardsticks as total shareholder return and earnings per share, usually measured over absurdly short time periods. The accounting numbers in the calculation are, to a degree, manipulable. The result is that incentive structures are at odds with the requirements of decent ethics. When that is the case, it is inevitable that ethics will sometimes become the casualty.

The problem of short-termism has been compounded in finance by the growing opacity and complexity of markets, notably the over-the-counter markets in derivatives and structured products. Also by the ascendancy of traders over corporate financiers and commercial bankers in the banking hierarchy. A transactional culture now prevails. On the trading floors, many regard themselves as hired guns, borrowing the capital of the bank to support their individualistic pursuit of personal profit. Loyalty to the organization is minimal. The culture of the trading floor owes more to the animal kingdom than to the fiduciary ethos that used to be seen as central to the workings of finance.

Equally problematic are the assumptions of economics and of modern finance theory, which put heavy emphasis on the behavior of "rational" agents who seek to maximize their own welfare through opportunistic behavior. The pursuit of material wealth is assumed to be the justification for individual and group behavior. For anyone lacking much of a moral conscience this amounts to an implicit ethical?or rather, unethical?agenda, given that acting other than opportunistically is perceived as irrational.

Much of the response to the scandals referred to earlier has been in the form of increased regulation. An ethics industry has grown up, with myriad ethics courses appearing in business schools and countless consultants devising ethics codes for large corporations. People at the top of the corporation have thus outsourced ethics. An internal market has thus developed to shift moral responsibility around the organization. All of this has spawned a culture of compliance and done nothing to prevent a plethora of corporate scandals and ethical lapses. Few are convinced by the statements of ethical principles produced by large corporations, still less by investment banks. So what can be done to address the ethical deficit in business and finance?

Bad behavior erodes trust and forces people to place heavier reliance on law and regulation.

The progenitors of the Robin Cosgrove prize rightly perceived a need to raise consciousness about the advantages of an ethical culture in finance. And one of the themes that emerge repeatedly throughout the essays in this book is the economic and social value of trust, whether in economies, markets or corporations. Trust is particularly important in financial markets. This becomes obvious if a comparison is made between financial and retail activity. With food, drink and clothes, consumers are quick to detect poor quality and will take their custom elsewhere. In contrast, many retail financial decisions are infrequent. People often make a decision on their pension only when they join the pension scheme and when they are preparing to leave it. By the time you discover you have made a mistake with a pension, a mortgage or car loan, it may be too late to do much about it. This makes it harder for the financial markets to identify rogues than in other industries. It is a sad fact that financial institutions that engage in widespread mis-selling rarely go out of business. They may be fined by the regulatory authorities. But senior management often regards the fines, which anyway fall on shareholders rather than managers, as an operating cost of the business.

This has bred a serious loss of confidence among the public about banking and finance. Against the background of excessive boardroom pay, the legitimacy of wealth creation and of the Western forms of capitalism is increasingly questioned. That underlines the importance of the Robin Cosgrove prize agenda. And the good new is that the environment for that agenda is not uniformly hostile. Many business people now recognize that companies and financial institutions operate in the social system and that their activities have social consequences. They also grasp that in running a business most decisions cannot be taken on the basis of a pure economic calculus and that simply complying with the law is not enough.

I would argue that ethics provide a complement to the internal constitution of the company that sets out the objects and rules for the conduct of the company's business. Likewise that the contract between management and shareholders is necessarily incomplete: Shareholders cannot be expected to sanction each and every decision taken by operational management. In fact, most shareholders?and not just ethical investment funds?would wish management to avoid making the maximum possible profit if, for example, this entailed abuses of human rights. To give just one illustration, how many pension scheme beneficiaries would be happy to profit from financing the building of a pipeline in Myanmar with forced labor? There are occasions when management has to make its best judgment of shareholders' views and allow ethics to trump a narrow profit-maximizing course of action.

A reading of the essays that follow encourages the view that trust in business and finance is vital. It creates social capital that facilitates cooperative behavior both in society and in organizations. Bad behavior erodes trust and forces people to place heavier reliance on the law and regulation. And the more transactions have to be governed by contract, the more cumbersome and expensive business and finance become, as everything has to be negotiated, agreed, litigated, and enforced. Such legalism, as a substitute for trust, gives rise to what economists call transaction costs. At a social level, according to the American thinker Francis Fukuyama, a lack of trust imposes a kind of tax on all forms of economic activity. At the corporate level, I would add, trust is an informal, low-cost substitute for cumbersome internal controls within the company and external regulation without. In an ethical culture everyone knows they can do the right thing decisively and with confidence. The business will tend to attract high caliber people of principle. Relations with customers and the general public will be enhanced.

The recent protests against capitalism and inequality in New York, London, and elsewhere have underlined the public dissatisfaction with the response to the financial crisis. We have learned from experience that it is not possible to regulate people into good behavior. In that sense, the Robin Cosgrove essays are an alternative agenda. Here's hoping for more than seven episodes in its second season.

"The Amazing Race"

"Undercover Boss"

No shock there.

"Kitchen Nightmares"

<strong>"Kitchen Nightmares," Fox <br /> Status:</strong> Renewed?<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> In early February, Fox signed on for a?16-episode fifth season of this other Gordon Ramsay series. They're in the Gordon Ramsay business, and they're not going anywhere.

"MasterChef"

<strong>"MasterChef," Fox <br /> Status:</strong> Likely to be renewed <br /> <strong>Why:</strong> No official announcement has been made regarding a third season, but there was a casting call issued during episodes throughout Season 2. And if Gordon Ramsay's track record with Fox is any indication, it's as good as renewed.

"Mobbed"

<strong>"Mobbed," Fox <br /> Status:</strong> On the bubble <br /> <strong>Why:</strong> It started with a ratings bang, but things have only gone down from there for Fox's flash mob reality show with Howie Mandel at the helm. It's not on the schedule in any regular timeslot though, so it's possible they'll continue producing a few episodes a year.

"Napoleon Dynamite"

Lo and her ex-husband Marc Anthony -- debuted on Univision, Fox picked up an English-language version that debuted in early March. Though the reality series underperformed in its Saturday night timeslot, it's not Fox's decision whether or not we'll see more "Q'Viva."

"Raising Hope"

<strong>"Raising Hope," Fox</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Thanks (or no thanks) in part to the success of "New Girl," the sophomore season of "Raising Hope" has moved around timeslots, but it has retained about a 2.1 score in the adults 18-49 demo.

"The Simpsons"

<strong>"The Simpsons," Fox</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> After a very tense contract standoff, the voice actors of "The Simpsons" and the studio agreed to new terms and the show was renewed through Season 25.

"So You Think You Can Dance"

<strong>"So You Think You Can Dance," Fox</strong><br /> <strong>Status: </strong>Too soon to tell<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Season 9 of "So You Think You Can Dance" won't debut until this summer and when it does, there will be changes: Fox has nixed the results show entirely. If the fanbase is still there, the cheaper production could save the show for another few seasons.

"Terra Nova"

<strong>"Terra Nova," Fox</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Canceled<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Fox pulled the plug on this very expensive dinosaur drama, but reports indicate producers are looking to keep the show alive on a different network.<br />

Fox showed faith in the series, giving it the post-"American Idol" slot, and it paid off.

"The X Factor"

<strong>"Awake," NBC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Canceled <br /> <strong>Why:</strong> "Awake" had gotten some great promotion, but its numbers were pretty middle of the road and only went down further -- genre shows with heavy serialized elements are always tricky.

<strong>"Bent," NBC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Canceled <br /> <strong>Why: </strong>The Amanda Peet comedy premiered in late March and had six episodes to prove itself, but NBC didn't give it much of a chance, airing them back-to-back.

"Community"

Cool, cool, cool -- you can pop, pop! that champagne now.

"Fashion Star"

<strong>"Fashion Star," NBC</strong> <br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why: </strong>The high-style reality series with Nicole Richie, Jessica Simpson, Elle Macpherson and John Varvatos has certainly been confusing, but it's still a smart business model: The winning designs each week are for sale in stores the next day, and those stores just happen to be covering a large portion of production and advertising costs.

"Fear Factor"

"The Firm"

"Free Agents"

<strong>"Free Agents," NBC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Canceled <br /> <strong>Why:</strong> This show just didn't have much life in it. It was canceled after just four episodes, despite its awesome lead actors Hank Azaria and Kathryn Hahn.

"Grimm"

<strong>"Grimm," NBC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> The supernatural fairy tale drama has been doing well for NBC on Friday nights -- it hovers around the 5 million viewers mark, which is pretty solid by NBC standards and why the network gave the drama an early renewal.

"Harry's Law"

<strong>"Harry's Law," NBC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong>Cancelled<br /> <strong>Why: </strong> While earlier this year "Harry's Law" was one of NBC's top players, after a three-month break between January and March, the Kathy Bates drama saw mediocre ratings and failed to hold on to viewers.

"Law & Order: SVU"

<strong>"Law & Order: SVU," NBC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> The only "Law & Order" left, "SVU" has been an NBC power player for 13 years and will return for a 14th.

"The Office"

<strong>"The Office," NBC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> It's hard to imagine a long-running, fan-favorite show like "The Office" going away without a big promotional push. The numbers are still good (by NBC standards) and "The Office" will return for a Season 9.

"Parenthood"

<strong>"Parenthood," NBC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> The perpetual bubble show has done pretty consistent numbers for NBC this season, but three seasons in and no signs of growth is both a good and bad sign ... luckily for fans, NBC gave it a Season 4 all the same.

"Parks and Recreation"

<strong>"Parks and Recreation," NBC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Just like the rest of NBC's Thursday comedy block, "Parks and Recreation" has serious ratings blues. Can critical acclaim keep "Parks" around for a Season 5? The answer is yes! "Parks" will return for Season 5.

"The Playboy Club"

<strong>"The Playboy Club," NBC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Canceled<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Apparently fictional slutty bunnies and real-life homewrecker Eddie Cibrian do not a successful show make. It only lasted three episodes. "The Girls Next Door" did it better.

"Prime Suspect"

<strong>"Prime Suspect," NBC <br /> Status:</strong> Canceled <br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Maria Bello's gruff detective failed to capture the audience NBC hoped. At least we had all those hat jokes. <br />

"Smash"

<strong>"Smash," NBC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed <br /> <strong>Why: </strong> After a huge promo blitz, "Smash" debuted nicely, but started losing viewers quickly. A handful of episodes in, it stabilized, becoming NBC's #1 drama in the 18-49 demo, and NBC announced it was getting a second season.

"Up All Night"

<strong>"Up All Night," NBC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> The critical favorite of NBC's new comedy offerings, "Up All Night" debuted strongly to more than 10 million viewers, but has since dropped to less than 4 million viewers an episode. It will return for a Season 2.

"Whitney"

<strong>"Whitney," NBC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> The show is one of the better performing freshman offerings on the Peacock network -- and NBC chief Bob Greenblatt told members of the press at TCA that he is "hopeful Whitney will be a long-term player for us." Looks like Season 2 is a good start, with the show moving to Friday nights.

"The Voice"

<strong>"The Voice," NBC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> We may not even be at Season 2's live shows yet, but NBC is already up for more of "The Voice." Hopefully, Cee Lo's cat "Purrfect" will return for Season 3 as well.

"Who Do You Think You Are?"

<strong>"Who Do You Think You Are?," NBC<br /> Status:</strong> Likely to be renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> The celebrity-centric family tree series has helped NBC on Friday nights and hit its ratings high in March.
