Surgery for obesity improves lives and may save money. There are two very commonly performed operations to treat morbid obesity in the UK but it is unclear which is the most effective and provides the greatest benefit for patients and the NHS.

The BY-BAND study led by the University of Bristol and funded by the National Institute for Health Research Health Technology Assessment (NIHR HTA) programme will compare the outcomes of stomach bypass and stomach band operations.

Professor Jane Blazeby, Consultant Upper GI Surgeon in the School of Social and Community Medicine at the University of Bristol, who is leading the study, said: "Obesity is an increasing health problem in the UK, which is predicted to worsen. Current national guidelines recommend that surgery should be considered for morbidly obese people or for those remaining obese after trying other options.

"The BY-BAND study will compare two types of operation, gastric bypass and gastric banding, to find out which one has the greater benefits."

BY-BAND will compare weight changes over three years between the two types of surgery and test specifically whether better overall quality of life is achieved with bypass surgery.

Due to the way surgery is organised BY-BAND will have a short preliminary phase in two hospitals to work out the best ways to involve patients, surgeons, and other health professionals before including more centres across the country.

The research team plan to study over 700 very over weight patients in a randomised trial. BY-BAND will also document differences in surgical complications, both at the time of surgery and for up to three years, and value for money for the NHS between the operations.

Obese adults who are referred for obesity surgery under current government guidelines can participate in the study. Half of patients who take part will be treated with gastric band surgery and the other half with gastric bypass surgery. Both operations are currently in use and neither operation is new or experimental. The type of operation will be decided by randomisation.

Participants will also be asked to complete a series of questionnaires about their quality of life, and some participants will be interviewed about their experiences of treatment decisions. Researchers will also ask participants to provide two blood samples in addition to the samples they would give as part of their normal care, for future research into obesity.

There will be two centres (Taunton and the University of Southampton) taking part in the trial in phase one and eight centres taking part in phase two. The study will be co-ordinated from the Clinical Trials and Evaluation Unit at the University of Bristol.

The study is expected to start recruitment in April 2012 and will run for approximately eight years, until the last recruited patient is followed-up. The trial will be recruiting patients until 2015 and the findings will be published in 2018.

Warren stumps on the Cape | CapeCodOnline.com

HYANNIS ? Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Elizabeth Warren whipped up a crowd of about 200 supporters at the Barnstable Senior Center Saturday.

Filling all the seats and stuffed into every corner, people clapped and cheered for each point made by the 62-year-old, pixy-like Harvard law professor. She made several stops from Falmouth to Truro Saturday during a Cape visit.

In Barnstable, they gave her a standing ovation even before she could completely utter her final goal, which Warren said, is to beat U.S. Senator Scott Brown, a Republican from Wrentham, in 2012.

Brown won the senate seat held for almost 50 years by the late Edward Kennedy, a Democrat.

A champion debate team member as a student in Oklahoma, Warren got her message across clearly and concisely on Saturday, beginning with her life story.

Warren's rallying cry is her desire to help the middle class and to rescue the old America where children typically did better than their grandparents.

She said the country needed to ?invest in itself,? that is, in education, research and infrastructure.
That's what helped her get ahead.

?I grew up in a middle class family that was hanging on, sometimes with white knuckles,? she said.

Her father, Donald Herring, a maintenance man, suffered a heart attack when Warren was in middle school. Her mother took a job working at Sears. They lost the family car, Warren said.

All three of her brothers entered the U.S. military, she added.

Warren excelled at school, graduating high school at 16.

She said she used a federal student loan program that encouraged students to enter fields, such as special education, that required manpower. After completing college at George Washington University, Warren became a special education teacher, and a portion of her loans were forgiven, she said.

?That was when America invested in its kids,? she said.

Barnstable Town Councilor Janet Joakim, of Centerville, told Warren her own daughter must make monthly student loan payments that are higher than her parents' mortgage payments.

?She'll never be able to buy a home,? Joakim told Warren.

?That's one of our most serious issues,? Warren said. ?Young people are getting further and further behind.?

Government programs such as the G.I. Bill and Project Head Start as well as community colleges and public universities, helped students get ahead, she said.

Today, attention to education, research and the country's infrastructure is way down; the proportion of the gross domestic product spent on research in the U.S. has gone down by 50 percent since the 1960s, Warren said.

China spends 10 percent of it gross domestic product on infrastructure and Europe spends 5 percent, she added.

?America spends 2.4 percent and we're trying to figure out how to cut it,? Warren said to applause.
Warren became a lawyer and then a law professor working at three universities before taking the job at the Harvard Law School in 1995.

In 2008, she was selected by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid to chair the Congressional Oversight Panel, which was created to monitor the $700 billion bank bailout effort known as the Troubled Asset Relief Program.

?Secretary (Henry) Paulson of the U.S. Treasury was shoveling money to financial institutions with no strings attached,? she said. ?The failure to make people (in the financial sector) accountable is a dark stain in our country.?

One person asked Warren how she differed from Brown on the topic reproductive rights for women.
She said Brown co-sponsored a bill that would allow employers and insurers to limit specific health care coverage, including contraception, based on religious or moral objections.

?This isn't about religion,? Warren said. ?What its really about is widening the number of insurers and employers who can deny basic health care needs ... I think it's profoundly wrong.?

Warren said she has a special connection to Cape Cod. The mother and father of her husband, Bruce Mann, are buried in a Hyannis cemetery.

The unauthorized entry to home with ease by clever immoral thief s get thwarted by a large number of security measures that are designed to improve window protection and all are a reality with so much variety of locks that are available before us to select. When provided with an opportunity, unethical people commit crimes without hesitation which is when most crimes occur. For home owners interested in the most secure type of lock, heavy-duty mechanisms that must be bolted into place are the best solution. You can simplify the installation by introducing some protection to the window.

Installation of locks is simple.

Locks are available online, at hardware stores, or home improvement warehouses. Even though wood framed windows provide several options to install locks, it is often installed on the bottom. It is easy to install and usually homeowners can do the work on their own with basic tools. A marking pen, nail, hammer, and screwdriver, and locking assembly are the only things necessary. The procedure that is used is given below.

  • Determine that the parts meet well and the key is wrking in the product.
  • Install the receiver and clasp by screwing them to window.
  • Starter holes can be best created using nails and hammer
  • Drill the pilot holes for the locking clasp the same way you did before.

This kind of lock can be installed so that it lets a window open just a bit so air can get through.

It is very easy to install window locks, but some people are not mechanically inclined and would prefer to entrust the job to a professional craftsmen. In the course of the project, outside help may be chosen by the elderly or disabled people. Homeowners with complicated alarm systems may also require installation assistance in order to safeguard the system?s integrity. Many professional contractors can do the work. Careers in security, carpentry and repair or maintenance are all outstanding choices.

A special kind of lock is needed for double-hung windows.

Sash locks are needed for older double-hung windows with upper and lower sections that can be raised or lowered from bottom or top. The lock prevents either section from being opened. Homeowners often choose decorative hardware that matches the period style of windows for authentic restorations. Window locks need not interfere with a room?s decor. Because they are available in wide variety of styles and finishes continuity of style can be maintained. Classic window locks include crescent-style, swing-arm, hook-style, and other locks. As outlined previously the same procedure can be used to install these locks.

Homeowners should install window locks on all first floor windows to protect their properties. The installation is very simple for most people to do, and the benefits can be extraordinary when family security is considered. Locks don?t cost much, can be bought via the internet, and are simple and quick to install. Instructions are included and should be read completely before assembly to ensure the operation has no issues hampering its performance. Enjoy peace of mind by choosing and securely installing a proper lock for each window.

Hard battle anticipated in The Gobata Championship Final Round ...

Hard battle anticipated in The Gobata Championship Final Round Leg 1 Puppies at Doncaster

The Gobata Championship Final Round Leg 1 Puppies will be hosted by Doncaster on Friday, February 24, 2012. The 483 metre long Grade IR event is due to commence at 20:15 (GMT). The ultimate champion will earn a lot respect alongside a cash prize of ?500.

Among the contestants are:

Westmead Bertie

Murlens Murcia

Aero Lillie

Farloe Kyle

Droopys Stig

Drive On Master

None of the contenders is coming into this clash after doing something special. Therefore, the meeting is likely to produce a huge surprise. Let?s make a statistical analysis in order to help the punters bet their money carefully.

Farloe Kyle has a classy win under his belt. The fawn dog did a wonderful job to seal a comprehensive victory at Sheffield on January 12. His chances cannot be ignored as he holds a brilliant track record.

B. Draper?s trainee started off his career with three back to back wins in November last year. However, he failed to maintain his consistency after that.

The hound has enormous talent but his inconsistent run might prevent his fans from pinning up big hopes on him. He is making this outing for a decent break and it will be a great chance for him to get back to his best.

Droopys Stig is at the threshold of his career but he has already impressed everyone by his wonderful run. The hound opened his account of victories at Romford where he outclassed Saint Jack on January 3.

This meeting will be his first trip this month and J. Daly?s trainee will look to resume his journey on a winning note. Droopys Maldini?s son out of Droopys Bridie recently made a couple of good solo outings and thus, he will be well prepared for the competition.

Drive On Master also has a few good recent performances to his credit. In his last race on Jan 14, the black dog could only finish second in the list.

However, he was at his best in his penultimate outing at Sunderland where he defeated Paradise Aruba by a neck?s margin. Inconsistency is certainly a big issue for T. Soppitt?s trainee but he still deserves some respect.

On the other hand, Westmead Bertie, Murlens Murcia and Aero Lillie don?t have bright chances of winning.

Final Prediction

Farloe Kyle is most likely to dominate the show. Yet, he cannot afford to be complacent as Droopys Stig and Drive On Master will give a lot of tough time on the track.

Disney Performing Arts Launches Search for Alumni (Disney and ...

Participants invited to showcase their unique Disney Performing Arts experiences and achievements

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (February 21, 2012) ? What do television star Jennifer Morrison,School of Rock?s Caitlin Hale and renowned musicians Jessy J, Mike Scheuchzer of MercyMe, and Jerry DePizzo of O.A.R. have in common? They are all distinguished alumni of Disney Performing Arts (formerly Magic Music Days).

Now the search is on for other Disney Performing Arts alumni who have achieved success in the performing arts or related careers. The new alumni search celebrates former participants of Disney Performing Arts workshops, clinics, performances and competitions. Disney wants to hear from some of the millions of students who since 1955 have marched, danced, performed or sung in Disney parks as part of music and dance ensembles. Inductees can profile their success and shine a spotlight on their school bands, dance teams, and choral and theater groups.

jerryDePizzo.jpg

Today?s students will find inspiration in the stories of past Disney Performing Arts participants and learn firsthand about the value of performing arts education. These stories reflect the diverse opportunities available through performing arts, from performance-based careers such as theatre and dance, to leadership careers including talent management, marketing and promotions. The discipline and energy derived from a performing arts background can also serve as a foundation for other successful careers beyond entertainment.

One Disney Performing Arts alumnus is Tim Hill, Director of Special Programs for Disney Destinations. As part of his role, Tim oversees the Disney Performing Arts Program at Disney theme parks around the world.

?My original Disney Performing Arts experience played an important role in my career,? said Hill. ?In 1979, I performed with my high school band at the Walt Disney World Resort. That trip solidified my passion for music and education, though I never dreamed that I would one day lead the team responsible for the Disney Performing Arts program. I?m looking forward to hearing more stories from other alumni.?

Since 1955, Disney Performing Arts has built a family of the world?s most elite singers, dancers and musicians. These performers have a common bond by performing for international audiences at Disneyland Resort in California or Walt Disney World Resort in Florida. Today, millions of student performers representing all 50 U.S. states and six continents have become a part of the Disney Performing Arts family, and many have continued to have a career in music, on stage or on screen.

See a solar eclipse from outer space

The moon takes a bite out of the sun's disk in this extreme ultraviolet view from NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory.

By Alan Boyle

The heavens have to align just right for a solar eclipse ? and for NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory, today was the day the heavens aligned. The only place where you could see today's partial eclipse was in outer space. But don't worry: Some of us earthlings will get a couple of chances later this year.

The Solar Dynamics Observatory watches the sun in multiple wavelengths of extreme ultraviolet light from a vantage point in geosynchronous orbit, about 22,000 miles (36,000 kilometers) above Earth's surface.

Sometimes other celestial bodies muscle in on SDO's view of the sun. Earth itself gets in the way twice a year, around the time of the spring and autumn equinoxes. Today, it was the moon's turn to take a bite out of the sun's bright disk.

Although this brief obstruction cut into the $850 million mission's observing time, the SDO team tried to make use of the opportunity, project scientist Dean Pesnell said in a blog posting. During its transit, the moon blocked the probe's view of an active region on the sun. That caused a dip in the energy recorded by the Extreme Ultraviolet Variability Experiment, or EVE, which "may allow scientists to calibrate the energy emitted by the active region," Pesnell said.

SpaceWeather.com's Tony Phillips mentions another opportunity provided by the eclipse: "The sharp edge of the lunar limb helps researchers measure the in-orbit characteristics of the telescope ... how light diffracts around the telescope's optics and filter support grids. Once these are calibrated, it is possible to correct SDO data for instrumental effects and sharpen the images even more than before."

Observers in a wide swath of East Asia, the Pacific and western North America will be able to see a partial solar eclipse with their own eyes on May 20. Some lucky folks will see something even rarer: an annular eclipse, in which the moon covers up most of the sun but leaves a thin ring of the bright disk shining in the sky. The U.S. West Coast and Southwest will be prime territory for that "ring of fire" eclipse.

On Nov. 13, a total solar eclipse will be visible from a corner of Australia and a long strip of the Pacific Ocean. You'll be hearing a lot more about these eclipses as we get closer to the events. In the meantime, feast your eyes on this time-lapse view of today's space eclipse in different wavelengths:

This video shows the partial solar eclipse in a variety of wavelengths used by NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory. Each wavelength shows a different temperature and layer of the sun. (Credit: NASA SDO)

This project went well for a while at least . . . - Family Woodworking

I was off work today and felt motivated to do something on the lathe. LOML has been after me for a bowl to put on the table by the front door for keys and such.

I broke out a 8" x 8" by 2" piece of maple that probably originated from Allen Levine's scrap pile. I attached a faceplace, rounded it out on the bandsaw and then started on the outside profile. I got the outside profile shaped, sanded and finished after a while. I need to get somesanding tools it I'm going to do very much of this sort of work. . . I need to dig back into the archives - Vaughn has posted the tools he uses to polish his bowls.

I then chucked it up in the lathe chuck and started hollowing. I need to get some lessons . . . I ended up pretty much scraping the entire interior of the bowl at I couldn't figure out how to use the bowl gouge . . . Next stop Youtube . . .

I was getting there when I realized that it had hollowed too deep and the bottom was paper thin. I attempted to continue but a catch on the rim shattered the bowl and ended this project.

I have 3 pic attached :

One showing the outside of the bowl - sans bottom,

Another showing the inside of the bowl pieces.

3rd image showing the cross section I had at blastoff.

Cheers

Jim

Bank of England chief sees up-down economic growth (AP)

LONDON ? The governor of the Bank of England says that Britain's economy is likely to grow slowly this year in a "zigzag" pattern of quarterly gains and setbacks in output.

Introducing the Bank's latest quarterly Inflation Report, Mervyn King said Wednesday that spending cuts and tight credit conditions at home and the weakness of major trading partners abroad is holding back growth.

The Inflation Report forecast growth of 1 percent in 2012 and 1.8 percent in 2013.

King added that inflation, currently 3.6 percent, is likely to fall to the official 2 percent target by the end of the year, and be below target for much of the following two years.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

LONDON (AP) ? Britain's unemployment rate edged up to 8.4 percent in the last quarter of 2011, official figures showed Wednesday, as 48,000 people lost their jobs compared with the previous three-month period.

The Office for National Statistics said the unemployment rate has not been higher since 1995. It rose from 8.3 percent in the three months through September and was unchanged from the three months through November.

Wages excluding bonuses were up 2 percent, compared with 1.9 percent in the three months through November. Total pay including bonuses was up 2 percent, unchanged from the previous report.

Pay has increased slowly during a period when inflation shot as high as 5.2 percent in September. The latest data show inflation has dropped to 3.6 percent, and some analysts think it might drop to around 1 percent by the end of the year.

"The latest figures show some encouraging signs of stability despite the challenging economic climate," said David Freud, the minister for welfare reform.

"However, we are not complacent. With more people in the labor market we know that competition for those jobs is tough and we will continue to make it our priority to find people work," Freud added.

Vicky Redwood, chief U.K. economist at Capital Economics, noted that total employment rose by 60,000 in the last quarter of the year but that just kept pace with the growth of the work force.

"We continue to expect unemployment to rise much further in response to the weakness in the wider economy," Redwood said.

Britain's economy shrank by 0.2 percent in the last quarter of 2011, according to the statistics agency's first estimate.

Yahoo's talks to sell Asian assets unravel (AP)

SAN FRANCISCO ? As Yahoo tries to head in a new direction, the fate of the struggling Internet company's Asian holdings remains in limbo.

The negotiations to sell Yahoo's stakes in China's Alibaba Group and Yahoo Japan abruptly broke off in a disagreement over the sales price and the best way to get the complex deal done, according to a person familiar with the matter. Another person familiar with talks said Yahoo had second thoughts after agreeing to the sales price in a 300-page proposal outlining the proposed deal in late December.

"It was the culmination of a lot of little items," one person said of the deal's collapse.

Both people spoke to The Associated Press on Tuesday on the condition of anonymity because the negotiations are considered to be confidential, despite repeated leaks about the discussions during the past few months.

All Things D, a technology blog affiliated with The Wall Street Journal, reported earlier that the talks had unraveled.

It's the latest twist in the drama that has been swirling around Yahoo Inc. since it fired Carol Bartz as CEO five months ago.

Since the start of the year, Yahoo has hired former PayPal executive Scott Thompson as CEO and announced the departures of five board members, including Chairman Roy Bostock and company co-founder Jerry Yang. One of Yahoo's major shareholders, New York hedge fund manager Daniel Loeb, outlined plans Tuesday to shake things up even more; he intends to wage a campaign to win a board seat for himself and three of his allies.

Thompson, Yahoo's fourth full-time CEO in less than five years, has pledged to engineer a turnaround that eluded his predecessors.

For now, though, investors are disillusioned with Yahoo's inability to close the deal on the Asian assets. The company's shares shed 76 cents, or 4.7 percent, to close at $15.36 ? below their price six weeks ago when Yahoo announced Thompson's hiring.

The Asian impasse comes as a surprise, given that Yahoo and the prospective buyers, Alibaba and Yahoo Japan shareholder Softbank Corp., all seemed motivated to seal a long-awaited deal. Yahoo was confident enough to dispatch negotiators to Hong Kong last week while Alibaba had been seeking financing to pay for its part, one person said.

But the sides couldn't agree on the value of Yahoo's holdings, which have been steadily rising in the past few years as Alibaba's electronic-commerce services prospered in China's rapidly growing Internet market. Analysts have also differed on how much Yahoo could fetch by selling its stakes, with estimates ranging from $11 billion to $18 billion.

To compound the challenges, the deal was arranged in a way that would have enabled Yahoo to avoid paying taxes. That proposal, according to both people who spoke to the AP, was structured a "cash-rich split-off" that would have resulted in Alibaba and Softbank contributing money and other assets into a special entity in exchange for Yahoo's stakes in the Asian companies. Yahoo then could have used the money generated from the Asian sale to placate its long-frustrated shareholders with a special dividend or other measures that might reverse a three-year slump in its net revenue.

The downturn has turned Yahoo's Asian stakes into the most valuable part of the company, even though its own operations still include websites boasting an audience of about 700 million people.

But Yahoo is having trouble attracting the advertisers who have been spending more money on the Internet in recent years, a trend that has been enriching online search leader Google Inc. and Facebook, the owner of the largest online social network.

Yahoo remains open to reviving the negotiations to sell its Asian assets at the right price, one of the people familiar with the matter said. That could include a new proposal that would taxable in the U.S., the other person said.

When Yahoo appeared reluctant to sell its Asian stakes late last year, investment firms Blackstone Group and Bain Capital considered teaming up with Alibaba and Softbank in a joint bid to buy Yahoo in its entirety, according to media reports that cited unnamed people. Yahoo also considered selling partial stakes of the company to other investment firms.

Bostock publicly acknowledged the different proposals that Yahoo had been considering last week when he announced he will be stepping down as the company's chairman. At that time, he stressed "we are not in a position at this time ... to provide assurance that any transaction will be achieved."

Further support for a role of synaptic proteins in autism spectrum disorders

Friday, February 10, 2012

A new study combines genetic and neurobiological approaches to confirm that synaptic mutations increase the risk of autism spectrum disorders (ASDs). It also highlights a role for modifier genes in these disorders. Published in PLoS Genetics, this research was conducted by researchers at the Institut Pasteur, the Paris Diderot University, the Robert Debr? Hospital, the Gillberg Neuropsychiatry centre, Ulm University and the Centre National de G?notypage, in collaboration with other institutions in Europe.

ASDs are a heterogeneous group of neurodevelopmental disorders with a complex inheritance pattern characterized by impairments in social interaction and communication, and by restricted and repetitive behavior. ASDs appear before the age of three years and affect 1/100 children, with a higher risk for males than for females. Several genes involved in ASD have been identified in patients with ASD, but only recently have we started to learn about their effects on neuronal functions and their interaction with other genetic variations.

In their new study, Leblond and collaborators identified mutations altering SHANK2, a gene that encodes a scaffolding protein located at synapses (contacts between neuronal cells). The researchers showed that several of the mutations observed in patients reduced the number of synapses in neuronal cell cultures. Further genomic analysis of three patients carrying SHANK2 deletions identified additional rare genomic imbalances, previously associated with other neuropsychiatric disorders, that could act as modifier genes by modulating the disorder.

These results emphasise the importance of synaptic gene dysfunction in ASD and also highlight a role for modifier genes, confirming a "multiple hit model" for ASD. "A better knowledge of these genetic interactions will be necessary to understand the complex inheritance pattern of ASD", concludes Thomas Bourgeron, an author on the paper.

Smartphone App Catches Depression Onset

60-Second Health60-Second Health | Mind & Brain

A smartphone app in development for depression patients tracks contacts and movement and prompts activities when patterns show withdrawal. Katherine Harmon reports.

More 60-Second Health

Is your cell phone ringtone-ing off the vestigial hook? The interruptions may be annoying. But for people with depression, getting a call can help them feel better?especially when they are in the midst of a low day. And therapists often have no way of knowing when their patients are stuck at home in a dark mood.

So researchers at Northwestern University hope to get smart phones to help. They?re developing an app that could monitor the frequency of a person's phone calls, texts and emails. [Michelle Nicole Burns et al, Harnessing Context Sensing to Develop a Mobile Intervention for Depression, Journal of Medical Internet Research]

Called Mobilyze!, the app can also tap into the phone's GPS and accelerometer to see if a user has been lying around at home all day. After learning your daily rhythms, the app should be able to notice any changes in behavior or telltale signs of isolation. If it does, it?ll send reminders to connect with other people or do something fun to help lift the gloom.

The Mobilyze! app is still being tested and tweaked. But for many people it could provide the one nagging reminder to call their mother?or brother, or friend?that they really need.

Ocean microbe communities changing, but long-term environmental impact is unclear

ScienceDaily (Feb. 9, 2012) ? As oceans warm due to climate change, water layers will mix less and affect the microbes and plankton that pump carbon out of the atmosphere -- but researchers say it's still unclear whether these processes will further increase global warming or decrease it.

The forces at work are enormous and the stakes huge, said Oregon State University scientists in an article published?February 10 in the journal Science. But inadequate ocean monitoring and lack of agreement on how to assess microbial diversity has made it difficult to reach a consensus on what the future may hold, they said.

"We're just beginning to understand microbial diversity in the oceans and what that may mean to the environment," said Stephen Giovannoni, an OSU professor of microbiology. "However, a large portion of the carbon emitted from human activities ends up in the oceans, which with both their mass of water and biological processes act as a huge buffer against climate change. These are extremely important issues."

The interest is growing, scientists say, because nearly half of the world's photosynthesis is contributed by microbial plankton, and the process of marine carbon production and consumption is much faster than on land. A turnover of terrestrial plant biomass takes 15 years, they say, while marine turnover takes just six days.

As the ocean surface warms, evidence shows that it will become more "stratified," or confined to layers that mix less than they did in the past. This should reduce overall ocean productivity, Giovannoni said, but so little is known about the effect on ocean microbes that the implication for carbon sequestration and global warming is less clear.

Some OSU research on routine seasonal changes of microbes in the Sargasso Sea of the Atlantic Ocean suggests that different and specialized microbial communities can become more dominant when water warms.

As warmer oceans become a more long-term and global phenomenon, researchers need to know more about these microbes, and whether their behavior will amplify or reduce atmospheric carbon and the greenhouse effect.

It could be either, Giovannoni said.

"Some warming of surface waters may reduce carbon sequestration, which could cause a feedback loop to increase global warming," Giovannoni said.

"Other forces, what we call the microbial carbon pump, could cause carbon to sink into the deep ocean and be segregated from the atmosphere for thousands of years," he said. "We know both of these processes exist, but which one will become dominant is unpredictable, because we know so little about ocean microbes."

It was only two decades ago that OSU scientists discovered SAR11, an ocean microbe and the smallest free-living cell known, but one that's now understood to dominate life in the oceans, thrives where most other cells would die and plays a huge role in carbon cycling on Earth.

Microbial action also surprised scientists just recently, Giovannoni noted, when specific microbe populations surged following the Gulf Coast oil spill and cleaned up much of the oil faster than many thought possible. And some plans to "fertilize" the ocean and sequester atmospheric carbon through marine phytoplankton growth have been put on hold, he said, because it just isn't certain what would happen.

To reduce that uncertainty, Giovannoni advocates more aggressive development and implementation of marine microbial monitoring technology around the world, to add to what scientists can already learn from study of satellite images. And the field is so new, he said, that many researchers are not even comparing the same types of data or standardizing the tools they use to assess microbial diversity -- a problem that needs to be addressed.

Dramatic advances in DNA sequencing in recent years, Giovannoni said, should also help researchers unravel the ocean microbe mystery.
