Scientists, doctors, Nobel winner, gather at UAB to share latest ...

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama -- About 250 doctors, researchers, students and scientists, including a Nobel Prize Laureate, will be meeting this weekend at the University of Alabama at Birmingham to talk T-cells, B-cells and other aspects of the human immune system.

It's the second annual Spring Immunology Symposium aimed at highlighting the work in the field at UAB and other institutions in the Southeast.

For the public, it offers a chance to see a Nobel Prize winner.

The free event features Dr. Rolf M. Zinkernagel, a 1996 Nobel Prize for Medicine winner from the University of Zurich, Switzerland, whose topic is "Immunology taught by viruses."

Zinkernagel will be speaking from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at the Alys Robinson Stephens Performing Arts Center, where the two-day event is being held. For a complete schedule Saturday and Sunday go here.

"We want to showcase immunology at UAB and the work being done in the Southeast," said Dr. Harry Schroeder, professor of Medicine, Microbiology, and Genetics at UAB. "A great deal of academia is focused on the coasts. But we have been doing a lot of great work here that I don't think always gets the recognition it deserves."

Schroeder is co-organizer of the symposium along with Hubert Tse, assistant professor in UAB's Department of Microbiology.

Schroeder said the symposium offers a chance for collaboration not just among senior scientists but the graduate students, trainees and fellows.

"Science is becoming big time," Schroeder said. "And increasingly scientists can't do things on their own. There's a need to collaborate. So part of what we are doing here is encouraging regional collaborations."

Shoeder said immunology touches on so many health issues, including arthritis, diabetes, AIDS, cancer, allergies and skin diseases.

With about 100 people working in immunology at UAB, the area of study is an important focus and major grant recipient of the university, he said.

Other featured speakers include Lasker Award winner, Dr. Emil Unanue of Washington University School of Medicine, and Dr. John Cambier of the Denver School of Medicine.

Those who are new to internet marketing often have no idea about the massive effect their habits will have on what they are about to do. There is a lot we can do to improve our chances of success, and taking-in and making the following habits your very own will be a great start.

Excellent business relations are the cornerstone of many businesses around the world. Whether it's with your subscribers, visitors or other Internet marketers, the only way you can make it big here is by focusing on building effective relationships.

Creating and nurturing new relationships in the Internet marketing world doesn't have to be a scary experience; once you start doing it you'll realize what you've been missing. Do not try to get over on people because that is not the basis for a positive and beneficial business relationship. Focus on how you interact with all others you are in contact with in your business. One important area that many internet marketers avoid dealing with is cultivating effective habits related to managing their time. If you are not making any money, then that is one thing; but if you are busy in your business then this can make a huge impact. It can be easy to get out of sync with things especially if you have a family and other important commitments. One great place to begin is by figuring out how you spend your time during your business days. If you are not an aggressive business growth person, then that is fine and maybe this will not matter so much for you. You need to devote quality time to all you do so everything gets done in the proper way.

Each time your results are not what you planned, then get in the habit of learning from that experience. So what is needed in order to not let failure hold you down or slow you down? We all have our unique methods of coping with frustrations and setbacks, but the most important with this is to accept that it will happen no matter what you do. Keep in mind this has nothing to do with your worth as a person, and it does not mean it is who or what you really are. Changing how you respond to failure or setbacks will take time, so just resolve to working on it every day. Think of forming effective habits as a form of investment for your online business. If you are not afraid or lazy, then there is nothing stopping you from doing this.

A look at the jurors for George Zimmerman's trial

(AP) ? The six women picked Thursday to serve on the jury in George Zimmerman's second-degree murder trial come from different backgrounds and they have varying knowledge about the case involving the former neighborhood watch volunteer who claims self-defense in the fatal shooting of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin.

Here are some details they shared during two weeks of jury selection. Their names will be released sometime after the trial, which could last two weeks to a month after opening statements on Monday.

Race and ethnicity have played a prominent role in the case. While the court did not release the racial makeup of the jury, the panel appeared to reporters covering jury selection to be made up of five white women and a sixth who may be Hispanic.

___

B-51 is retired, not married and doesn't have kids. She has lived in Seminole County for nine years. She has worked in real estate and run a call center where she said she had experience resolving conflicts. When asked if Zimmerman did something wrong by following Martin instead of waiting for police, she said: "Yeah, I guess he did do something wrong."

___

B-29 recently moved to central Florida from Chicago. She enjoys watching the "Real Housewives" on television and works as a nurse on an Alzheimer's section of a nursing home. She said she hadn't paid much attention to the shooting. She said she has been arrested, but her case was disposed of. It's not clear why she was arrested or exactly what happened to her case, though she said she was treated fairly. She is married and has several children. A prosecutor described her as "black or Hispanic" during jury selection.

___

B-76 is a white woman who has lived in central Florida for 18 years. She manages rental properties with her husband of 30 years. She has two adult children, including one who is an attorney. She is involved with rescuing animals in her free time. During jury selection, she said she had been the victim of a nonviolent crime. "Everyone deserves a fair trial," she said.

___

B-37 is a white woman who volunteers rescuing animals. She is married to an attorney and has two adult children. She said she and her husband used to have concealed weapons permits. During the last round of questioning, she said she had an issue with the type of weapons people are allowed to carry. She also thought weapons' training was inadequate for people seeking permits. "It should become harder," she said.

___

E-6 is a white woman who is married and has two children. She has worked in financial services and has lived in Seminole County for two years. She is active in her church and involved with her children's school. During jury selection, she said she didn't know the facts of the case well.

___

E-40 is a white woman who works as a safety officer and recently moved to Seminole County from Iowa. She describes herself as a football fan. During jury selection, she said she had been the victim of a nonviolent crime.

Taylor Swift's loyal fanbase defended the singer's honor against Abercrombie & Fitch.

Don't mess with the Swifties!

Clothing company Abercrombie & Fitch learned this lesson the hard way when it debuted a T-shirt that poked fun at singer Taylor Swift's seemingly endless parade of beaus.

The shirt, which read "#more boyfriends than t.s." in silver lettering, infuriated the singer's rabid fan base (known as "Swifties"), and even caused one fan to create a petition on the website change.org to have the shirt removed from the store's shelves.

"Abercrombie & Fitch: Take away "#More boyfriends than t.s." t-shirt...Because it's hurtful to Taylor Swift and Swifties everywhere!" the petition read, alongside a photo of the offending tee with a slash through it.

While the petition only garnered 95 signatures, it was enough for the brand to take notice. The store removed the shirt from its collection and changed the greeting of its public relations phone line to address the plethora of calls from angry Swift fans.

"Thank you for calling Abercrombie & Fitch public relations. If you are calling regarding the Taylor Swift T-shirt, please note this is no longer available,? the current greeting states.

In addition, a pro-Taylor message was posted on the company's Twitter account.

Too green to be true? Highly effective method for converting CO2 into methanol

June 20, 2013 ? Universit? Laval researchers have developed a highly effective method for converting CO2 into methanol, which can be used as a low-emissions fuel for vehicles. The team led by Professor Fr?d?ric-Georges Fontaine presents the details of this discovery in the latest issue of the Journal of the American Chemical Society.

Researchers have been looking for a way to convert carbon dioxide into methanol in a single step using energy-efficient processes for years. "In the presence of oxygen, methanol combustion produces CO2 and water," explained Professor Fontaine. "Chemists are looking for catalysts that would yield the opposite reaction. That would allow us to slash greenhouse gas emissions by synthesizing a fuel that would reduce our dependence on fossil fuels."

The catalyst developed by Fr?d?ric-Georges Fontaine and his team is made of two chemical groups. The first is borane, a compound of boron, carbon, and hydrogen. The second, phosphine, is made up of phosphorus, carbon, and hydrogen. "Unlike most catalysts developed thus far to convert CO2 into methanol, ours contains no metal, which reduces both the costs and toxic hazard of the catalyst," added the chemistry professor at the Faculty of Science and Engineering.

CO2 to methanol catalysis requires a source of hydrogen and chemical energy. The researchers had the idea of using a compound called hydroborane (BH3), and the results have been spectacular. The reaction achieved is two times more effective than the best catalyst known -- and it produces little waste. What makes the discovery even more compelling is the fact that the chemical reaction does not damage the catalyst, which can be reactivated by adding new substrate.

The only downside of the operation is the price tag. "Our approach to creating methanol is highly effective from a chemistry standpoint, but for now the process is expensive," explained Professor Fontaine. "It takes a lot of energy to synthesize hydroborane, which makes it more expensive than methanol. We are working on ways to make the process more profitable by optimizing the reaction and exploring other hydrogen sources."
