(AP) ? The 19 firefighters killed Sunday in Arizona were part of an elite crew known for working on the front lines of region's worst fires, including two this season that came before the team descended on the erratic fire that claimed their lives.

All but one member of the Prescott-based Hotshot crew died in what was the deadliest wildfire for firefighters in the U.S. in decades.

Prescott Fire Chief Dan Fraijo said the 19, whose names had not been released, were a part of the city's fire department.

Before the fire near Yarnell, the group ? one of 13 Arizona Hotshot crews ? had been profiled in local media last year as they prepared for the fire season and this year as they took on a blaze near Prescott earlier this month.

"The Hot Shots may be fighting the fire with fire," Prescott firefighter and spokesman Wade Ward told the Prescott Daily Courier in an interview last week (http://bit.ly/10tLAsZ). "They may be removing the fuels from the fire, or building a containment line that might be a trigger point for farther down the line."

He told the newspaper members of Hotshot crews are highly trained and work long hours in extreme conditions as they carry out the most demanding of tasks. When the deadly blaze near Yarnell erupted Friday, it came amid a severe heat wave that gripped much of the West. It grew out of control as it was fanned by gusty, hot winds Sunday.

"By the time they got there, it was moving very quickly," Fraijo told The Associated Press of Sunday's fire.

Hotshot crews ? there are more than 100 in the U.S. ? often hike for miles into the wilderness with chain saws and backpacks filled with heavy gear to build lines of protection between people and fires. They remove brush, trees and anything that might burn in the direction of homes and cities.

The Prescott-based crew last year had four rookies on its 22-member squad, according to a Cronkite News Service report that profiled the group (http://bit.ly/Id3Ca8).

State forestry spokesman Art Morrison told the AP that the firefighters were forced to deploy their emergency fire shelters ? tent-like structures meant to shield firefighters from flames and heat ? when they were caught in the fire.

The Cronkite News Service had featured the group in its story practicing such deployment in a worst-case scenario drill.

"One of the last fail safe methods that a firefighter can do under those conditions is literally to dig as much as they can down and cover themselves with a protective ? kinda looks like a foil type ? fire-resistant material ? with the desire, the hope at least, is that the fire will burn over the top of them and they can survive it," Fraijo said Sunday.

"Under certain conditions there's usually only sometimes a 50 percent chance that they survive," he said. "It's an extreme measure that's taken under the absolute worst conditions."

What is the Best Current Credit Card For Home Improvement and ...

TPG reader Mark has some big changes on the horizon ? with some big expenses ? and wants to know how to maximize his spending either with his current credit cards, or new ones.

?We are about to move to a new house and we have a number of pretty large expenses coming up (new kitchen appliances, moving costs, etc). ?Whenever putting a lot down on a credit card I always look for the best miles/points offer out there and try to get a new card, but right now I am not sure what I want to sign up for. ?

I currently have the Starwood Preferred Guest Amex, Amex Platinum, US Airways MasterCard and the United MileagePlus Explorer card (also I just cancelled the American Advantage card so I could get the US Airways card and I will go back and get the new American card once that is introduced post-merger). ?

I have miles on a number of different airlines so I don?t need to build up on a particular airline and we are about to have another child so I don?t plan on any big international trips for a couple of years. Any thoughts on the best deal running right now that might suit my needs??

Evaluating the current cards that Mark has, if he wants flexible, valuable points, I would probably say to go for the Starwood Amex. Starwood points transfer to over 30 different airlines for a lot of flexibility, and every 20,000 miles you transfer to many different partners, you get 5,000 bonus miles ? a 25% bonus. You can also use SPG points for really valuable redemptions. For example, I just used mine for Cash & Points in Santiago, Chile, for over 5 cents per point in value.

The Starwood Amex is a popular card because it has over 30 airline partners.

The Starwood Amex is a popular card because it has over 30 airline partners.

The United MileagePlus Explorer card is another option, however, since it gives you a 10,000-mile bonus for spending $25,000 every?calendar year. I don?t know exactly how much in expenses you?ll have, but if you have a huge amount you might think about going for that bonus.?I actually think that United miles are the most valuable miles since you can use them for awards on United?s Star Alliance partners and can book one-way awards with them. Although you can transfer Starwood points to United, ?it is at a terrible 2:1 ratio so if you want United miles you should definitely get the United Explorer or a card that earns Ultimate Rewards points from Chase.

The Chase Freedom card will earn you

The Chase Freedom card has Loews as a bonus category this quarter.

Looking at new cards, the Chase Freedom actually has Lowes as one of its bonus categories this quarter ? but just until June 30 (today!). If have the card but didn?t mention it, and you?re looking to pick up some appliances there, you can max out that bonus category by spending $1,500 and earn get five valuable Ultimate Rewards points per dollar while doing so.

The next most sensible card to get is the Chase Ink Bold or Ink Plus if you have a business. You?re going to get 50,000 points after spending $5,000 over three months, which it looks like you?ll be able to do pretty easily. The great thing here is when using an Ink card you get 5 points per dollar at all office supplies stores so you can buy moving supplies or buy gift cards to places like Home Depot or a bunch of other retailers to buy paint and things like that, and you will get 5 Ultimate Rewards dollars per dollar spent. That sure beats the 1 point per dollar that you are going to get on your United Explorer card. Ultimate Rewards points transfer to United as well as a bunch of different partners like Southwest and Hyatt.

Spend $30,000 in a year, to get the British Airways Travel Together ticket.

Spend $30,000 in a year, to get the British Airways Travel Together ticket.

There are a number of cards out there that will give you big bonuses when spending big thanks to calendar year spending threshold bonuses:

American Express Premier Rewards Gold Card: Spend?$30,000 in a year, earn?15,000 bonus Membership Rewards points.

British Airways Visa: Spend $30,000 in a year, earn the?Travel Together ticket.

Citi Executive?American Airlines?AAdvantage World Elite MasterCard: Spend $40,000 in a year, earn 10,000 elite-qualifying miles.

Delta Reserve Credit Card from American Express:?Spend?$30,000?in a year, earn 15,000 MQMs. Spend?$60,000?in that same year, earn an?additional 15,000 MQMs.

Platinum Delta SkyMiles Credit Card from American Express:?Spend?$25,000?in eligible purchases in a year, earn 10,000 Medallion Qualification Miles. Spend?$50,000?in the same calendar year, earn an additional?10,000 MQMs.

Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards Premier Credit Card: Spend $10,000 in a year,?earn?1,500?Tier Qualifying Points for every $10,000 in purchases. Get up to?15,000 Tier Qualifying Points?annually.

United MileagePlus Explorer Card:?Spend $25,000 in a year, earn?10,000 bonus redeemable miles.

US Airways MasterCard: Spend $25,000 in a year, earn?10,000 Preferred Qualifying Miles.

US Bank FlexPerks Visa Signature: Spend?$24,000 in a?cardmember year, earn?3,500?bonus FlexPoints.

Virgin Atlantic American Express: Spend $25,000 in a year, earn?15,000 bonus miles. Earn one?tier point?per $2,500 in purchases (maximum of 2 per month).

The bottom line is it really just depends on what you want. If you want to go for valuable, flexible points I would definitely recommend getting in on an Ultimate Rewards card, if not, banking up between the United Explorer and Starwood Amex would probably make the most sense. One last tip, always try to shop using an online portal and then pick up your purchase in the store rather than buying goods there. You are not always going to get the extra points ?- but a lot of times I have so it can?t hurt to try!

Funeral held for man in ex-Patriot's murder case

By RODRIQUE NGOWI

BOSTON (AP) - Hundreds of relatives, friends and teammates wept together and hugged Saturday at the funeral of a semi-pro football player whose killing led to murder and weapons charges against former New England Patriots player Aaron Hernandez.

The body of Odin Lloyd was found June 17 near Hernandez's home. Police arrested Hernandez on Wednesday and charged him with orchestrating the execution-style shooting.

Lloyd played for the Boston Bandits and was dating the sister of Hernandez's fiancee. Members of Lloyd's team showed up for the funeral in their uniforms and chanted his name as pallbearers placed his casket in a hearse outside Church of the Holy Spirit in Boston's Mattapan neighborhood. The crowd of mourners was so large that some could not find room inside the church for the two-hour service.

Hernandez has pleaded not guilty and is being held without bail. Two other men are also in custody. Prosecutors say the three were in a car with Lloyd shortly before his death.

Authorities have said trouble that led to Lloyd's killing happened June 14, when Lloyd went with Hernandez to a Boston nightclub. Hernandez became upset when Lloyd began talking with people Hernandez apparently didn't like, prosecutors said.

On June 16, the night before the slaying, a prosecutor said, Hernandez texted two unidentified friends and asked them to hurry to Massachusetts from Connecticut.

A few minutes later, he texted Lloyd to tell him he wanted to get together, prosecutors said. Authorities say Hernandez, Carlos Ortiz and Ernest Wallace picked up Lloyd at around 2:30 a.m. June 17, drove him to an industrial park near Hernandez's home and shot him five times. They have not said who fired the shots.

Prosecutors said an ammunition clip found in Hernandez's Hummer matched the caliber of casings found at the scene of Lloyd's killing.

Hernandez's lawyer argued in court that the case is circumstantial. He said Hernandez, who was cut by the Patriots the day he was arrested, wanted to clear his name.

Ortiz's attorney, John Connors, said he will seek bail for his client at the July 9 hearing. He described Ortiz as a "gentle person" and said he will advise Ortiz to plead not guilty to the gun charge he is facing.

Wallace surrendered in Miramar, Fla., on Friday, police said. Authorities had been seeking Wallace on a charge of acting as an accessory after Lloyd's murder. Details of that allegation weren't released.

Hernandez was drafted by the Patriots in 2010 and signed a five-year contract worth $40 million last summer. He could face life in prison if convicted.
