Yemeni al-Qaida leader warns Americans on security

CAIRO (AP) ? The military leader of al-Qaida's Yemeni branch says Americans will not be safe unless their leaders respect the security of other nations and do not attack or oppress them.

In a message addressed "to the American nation," Qassim al-Rimi, commander of al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula, said: "your security is not achieved by despoiling other nations' security or by attacking and oppressing them."

The six-minute English-subtitled audio, posted on a militant website late Saturday, implored Americans to "leave us with our religion, land and nations and mind your own internal affairs."

Al-Rimi said the bombing of the Boston marathon in April, and the recent sending of ricin-tainted letters "indicate that the control of your security has broken away." The video was produced by al-Qaida's media arm, al-Malahem Foundation.

Hubble sees the messy result of a galactic collision

June 1, 2013 ? A new image from the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope captures an ongoing cosmic collision between two galaxies -- a spiral galaxy is in the process of colliding with a lenticular galaxy.

The collision looks almost as if it is popping out of the screen in 3-D, with parts of the spiral arms clearly embracing the lenticular galaxy's bulge.

The image also reveals further evidence of the collision. There is a bright stream of stars coming out from the merging galaxies, extending out towards the top of the image. The bright spot in the middle of the plume, known as ESO 576-69, is what makes this image unique. This spot is believed to be the nucleus of the former spiral galaxy, which was ejected from the system during the collision and is now being shredded by tidal forces to produce the visible stellar stream.

Patrick Stewart told the Comicpalooza audience that his mother was blamed for the abuse rained on her by his father.

On television, he was the almost unflappable Captain Jean-Luc Picard on "Star Trek: The Next Generation." But Patrick Stewart was raised in a poor household with an abusive father, and the experience gave him the fire to work for such causes once he had the fame to make himself heard.

Stewart appeared at Comicpalooza in Texas over the Memorial Day weekend, and while there, answered questions from audience members.

Heather Skye, who blogs at Lemon Sweetie, thanked Stewart for a speech he gave at an Amnesty International event about domestic violence, saying that she had come through a similar event and appreciated his speaking out, and asked him about what non-acting work he's the most proud of.

And then things got personal. Stewart, who has spoken about his father's abuse before, referenced his own childhood in 1940s England. "The work that I do in campaigns about violence towards women, particularly domestic violence, grew out of my own childhood experience," he said.

He discussed the specific groups he works with, and went on to say, "I do what I do in my mother's name, because I couldn't help her then. Now I can."

Stewart said his father, a World War II veteran, was then said to suffer from severe shellshock, but would today be diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder. He works with both the veterans' mental-health charity Combat Stress as well as the domestic-violence shelter Refuge, saying he does so because of both of his parents.

"As a child, I heard in my home doctors and ambulance men say, 'Mrs. Stewart, you must have done something to provoke him,'" Stewart said to Skye and the crowd. "'Mrs. Stewart, it takes two to make an argument.' Wrong! WRONG! My mother did nothing to provoke that, and even if she had, violence is never ever a choice that a man should make. Ever!"

The crowd gave Stewart a standing ovation, and shortly after, he walked into the crowd and hugged Skye. She wrote on her blog, "He told me 'You never have to go through that again, you?re safe now.' I couldn?t stop thanking him. His embrace was so warm and genuine. It was two people, two strangers, supporting and giving love. And when we pulled away he looked (straight) in my eyes, like he was promising that. He told me to take care. And I will."

Sex on a Pile of Cash Sounds Great Until Your Online Date Robs You

Imagine this: You set up the perfect kinky hook-up on the Internet. You found a hot partner who wants to have sex with you, provided this sex happens on top of a pile of cash. So you find the pile of cash, you show up at the appointed time to get lucky, only to find out that it's not your lucky day at all.

Nick Veronin at the Mountain View Voice reports two almost identical incidents over 48 hours in Silicon Valley, in which unsuspecting schlubs were robbed after arranging a casual encounter online.

It each case, the men, 22 and 30 years old, made plans online to meet a woman for sex. Both men were told to bring $2000 in cash to the same apartment complex in Mountain View. In at least one of the cases, the plan was to spread the cash over a bed before having sex on top of it.

Upon arriving at the specified location, both of the men were robbed of the money by a pair of other men. Nobody had sex. Even worse, one of the men lost his job following the ordeal because he had "borrowed" the cash from work.

The Mountain View police won't disclose which online service or website was used to set up the hook ups. But be careful out there people! The world is full of creeps. [Mountain View Voice]

Boston rockers play fundraiser for bomb victims

BOSTON (Reuters) - A succession of all-star bands from Aerosmith to Jimmy Buffet rocked a packed house at Boston's TD Garden on Thursday night in a mostly raucous fund-raiser for the victims of last month's marathon bombing.

Tickets priced between $35 and $285 sold out fast at the 17,500-seat venue, with net proceeds to be donated to The One Fund, a reserve established by Boston Mayor Thomas Menino and Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick that has so far received more than $37 million in donations to compensate victims of the April 15 bombing.

The music kicked off with a Jimi Hendrix-style distortion guitar version of the U.S. national anthem by rock band Boston that drew cheering fans out of their seats before lead singer Tommy DeCarlo told the crowd "Tonight we are all Boston."

Another Massachusetts band, Extreme, transformed the energy with a sing-along version of "More Than Words" - an acoustic love song - before the homegrown J. Geils Band unleashed a torrent of fast-paced R&B as lead man Peter Wolf strutted the stage in black leather and shades.

"We came up here to help out Boston, but also because these are some great bands," said Shelly Watson, who drove up from Rhode Island with her husband to see the show, which also included comedians and a short speech by Victoria McGrath, a young girl who was injured in the bombing.

Other acts included country star Jason Aldean, who despite not being from Massachusetts admitted to being a fan of the Boston Red Sox baseball team, New Kids on the Block, James Taylor and Aerosmith - which made a round-the-world detour from Singapore to make the show.

Donnie Wahlberg from New Kids on the Block won the decibel award when he took the microphone and yelled the word Boston repeatedly, drawing enthusiastic shrieks from the audience.

"We came here tonight to show the world how resilient we are," he said.

Fellow band mate Joey McIntyre displayed the marathon medal he earned on the day of the explosion before the group broke into a run of songs including "I'll Be Loving You" and "Step By Step."

Aerosmith closed the show with a bang with lead man Steven Tyler sporting an ankle-length cape and leopard-pattern shirt dancing with his microphone stand while singing rousing versions of "Sweet Emotion" and "Living on the Edge."

"How heavy does your heart feel after a night like this?" he asked the cheering crowd.

Concert organizers have declined to say yet how much money the concert will raise for The One Fund, but have said bands and venue employees were working for free.

Three people were killed and 264 injured, many losing their legs, by homemade pressure-cooker bombs that exploded at the finish line of the world-renowned Boston Marathon on April 15.

Kenneth Feinberg, a lawyer who specializes in mediation, was tapped by Menino and Patrick to run The One Fund. Feinberg has warned victims to lower their expectations of how much money the fund would be able to pay individual beneficiaries.

Boston bomb suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, an ethnic Chechen with roots in Russia's volatile northern Caucasus, was captured in a dramatic police manhunt days after the bombing. He was criminally charged and is being held in jail.

His brother, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, was also identified by the FBI as a suspect but he was killed in a gunfight with police. U.S. security officials have said they believe the brothers had Islamic militant sympathies.

Celgene gets EU panel vote on cancer drug Pomalyst

NEW YORK (AP) -- Celgene Corp. said Friday that a regulatory panel in the European Union is recommending that its cancer drug Pomalyst be approved.

Celgene said it expects to get a decision on the drug in two to four months. Pomalyst is intended to treat multiple myeloma, a cancer of the blood, in patients who have not been helped by other cancer drugs. The Food and Drug Administration approved it in February.

Shares of Celgene rose 96 cents to $125.51 in morning trading.

BANGKOK (AP) ? Asian stock markets were choppy Friday after lackluster U.S. economic reports raised expectations that the U.S. Federal Reserve would stick to its aggressive stimulus policies.

U.S. unemployment claims rose and first-quarter growth was revised lower Thursday, which in a perverse turn of events was encouraging for investors who want to see the Fed continue its mammoth purchases of government bonds to support the U.S. economy.

The Fed's $85 billion-a-month purchases are aimed at keeping interest rates low to spur borrowing and investment. The efforts have boosted stock markets, where investors have turned for returns beyond what bonds are paying.

Japan's Nikkei 225 rose 1.6 percent to 13,802.51 after shedding more than 5 percent the previous day. South Korea's Kospi advanced 0.2 percent to 2,004.64. Australia's S&P/ASX rose 0.2 percent to 4,940.30. Benchmarks in New Zealand and the Philippines rose.

Still, some analysts said it was worrying how investors plowed into stocks despite the negative economic reports.

"It is concerning that markets are reacting to data this way. Bad news should be seen as bad news," said Evan Lucas of IG Markets in Melbourne.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng fell 0.1 percent to 22,461.85. Benchmarks in Indonesia and Singapore fell.

On Thursday, U.S. economic growth in the first quarter was lowered to an annualized rate of 2.4 percent from 2.5 percent while weekly jobless claims rose by 10,000 and pending home sales gained by far less than anticipated in April.

Most economists think U.S. growth is slowing to around a 2 percent annual rate in the April-June quarter as the economy adjusts to federal spending cuts, higher taxes and further global weakness. Still, many say the decline may not be as severe as once thought. That's because solid hiring, surging home prices and record stock gains should keep consumers spending.

Traders are also keeping an eye on China. Its official manufacturing index for May is to be released on Saturday. A similar survey by HSBC Corp. issued last Thursday showed China's manufacturing contracted to a seven-month low of 49.6 from April's 50.4 on a 100-point index. Numbers below 50 show a contraction.

Andrew Sullivan of Kim Eng Securities in Hong Kong said traders were keeping their expectations in check for China, since as a huge exporter it is sensitive to global economic weakness.

"As long as it's not far off the 50 mark, I don't think people will be too worried," Sullivan said of the China manufacturing index.

On Wall Street, the Dow Jones industrial average rose or 0.1 percent to close at 15,324.53 on Thursday. The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 0.7 percent to 1,654.41. The Nasdaq composite index rose 0.7 percent to 3,491.30.

Benchmark oil for July delivery was up 23 cents to $93.84 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose 48 cents to close at $93.61 per barrel on the Nymex on Thursday.

In currencies, the euro was down at $1.3033 from $1.3043. The dollar rose to 101.02 from 100.96 yen.
