Business Continuity Planning versus Disaster Recovery: Are they the same?
Technology has become entrenched as a cornerstone in most companies? daily operation, regardless of their size or complexity.? Given the potential risks of operating disruption or data loss arising from IT service disruptions, Disaster Recovery Planning (DRP) has become a critical function for IT departments or third party IT service providers.
A question that often is raised is ?The organization has invested a great deal of money in support of a DRP by acquiring backup hardware, off-site data co-location, or hosted solutions -- so are we covered??
While this is a broad question, the likelihood that even the best DRP will be sufficient in times of crisis is fairly small.? A bit of additional background may help shed more light.
By definition, Disaster Recovery (DR) is ?The technical aspect of business continuity.? The collection of resources and activities to re-establish information technology services (including components such as infrastructure, telecommunications, systems, applications and data) at an alternate site following a disruption of IT services.? Disaster recovery includes subsequent resumption and restoration of those operations at a more permanent site?

In contrast, Business Continuity (BC) is defined as ?A holistic management process that identifies potential impacts that threaten an organization and provides a framework for building resilience with the capability for an effective response that safeguards the interests of its key stakeholders, reputation, brand and value creating activities. The management of recovery or continuity in the event of a disaster. Also the management of the overall program through training, rehearsals, and reviews, to ensure the plan stays current and up to date.?
It becomes a bit clearer from these definitions that DRP is essentially a sub-set of the broader process of BCP.? The DR focus is solely on assets surrounding IT, whereas BC focuses on all the organization assets ? people, brand, buildings, processes, and data.

To help provide further clarification-- in the event off a fire at a workplace, having DR plans to recover information and business systems will be critical in ensuring issues such as safety of client and financial data, production information, orders, compliance for accounting audits and taxation, they do not cover key considerations such as:

???????? how employees and customers will safely be evacuated from the building;

???????? where the business will operate through the immediate response period to the crisis;

???????? who will be responsible for overseeing various sets of activities during, and immediately following the crisis; and what authority they might have during this response and recovery period;

???????? how the organization will communicate to suppliers, customers, employees (and potentially their families) and shareholders or funding sources;

???????? where the operation will relocate immediately after the crisis - ?during the recovery period.
Following a serious event, while it might be useful to access accounting data from a hosted service provider, if there are no contingency plans in place to facilitate the organization?s value-generating functions (such as ongoing production) in order to meet client demands, it is still highly likely that an organization will suffer significant losses to cash-flow and profitability, potentially lose employees through attrition or layoffs, and the customers may be forced to seek alternate providers for their goods and services.? While these issues may appear to be the indirect impact of the critical event (i.e. the building fire), they are actually the direct impact of a failure to have appropriate programs in place to ensure the long-term viability of the organization.
Generally, DRP?s are driven by the IT function within an organization, and hopefully consider the core IT requirements of the various stakeholders within the organization.? On the other hand, a robust BCP should be driven by a Steering Committee that represents all key stakeholders across the organization, and leverage the insights and experience of all key functions that support the organization.? This broader perspective helps ensure that the final plans will be more robust, and that the proposed solutions will be workable and practical in the event that they need to be actioned in the aftermath of a critical event.
In clarifying the difference between these types of plans, it is important to remember that both are critical for ensuring the long-term viability of an organization.? Both plans, when developed and produced in conjunction with one another, will help and organization mitigate both the risks and impacts of a potential crisis.? Both are valuable, and should be considered critical parts of an organization?s regular management process.

'Catching Fire': Why Hiring Francis Lawrence Makes Sense

We examine the director's qualifications for the second installment in the 'Hunger Games' series.
By Kevin P. Sullivan

On Thursday night, Lionsgate officially offered "Catching Fire" to director Francis Lawrence. The development was widely considered the next letdown in a series of disappointments for fans, who felt Gary Ross' departure was a premature one. But based on what we know about "Catching Fire" and what Lionsgate was reportedly looking for in a replacement, Lawrence was by far the most likely choice.

Here is why Francis Lawrence makes complete sense as the director for "Catching Fire":

He Can Do Action
One of the major complaints about Ross' direction of "The Hunger Games" was that he lacked experience shooting action sequences and it showed. If Lionsgate had to find a new director for the series' second entry, choosing one who has more experience with higher-intensity scenes does makes sense. Though Lawrence's name does not come with the prestige of the other directors on the shortlist, he has the most experience of any of them with directing a big-budget action film.

He's Relatively Inexpensive
Early rumors of Ross' exit had pegged money as the main stumbling block when trying to recruit the director for the second film. We know that Ross made most of his money from "The Hunger Games" on the back end, taking a much lower fee upfront. Lionsgate was reportedly looking to not spend a ton of money on the director for "Catching Fire," and the up-and-coming directors filling out the shortlist more or less confirms that. What makes Lawrence different is that he has the mainstream success that the other independent film directors do not, but he's probably just as willing to work for Lionsgate's lowered fees.

He Knows the Tone
Lawrence's first two films take place in worlds based largely in a reality not far from our own, but ones that add in fantastical elements. In "I Am Legend," Will Smith's character lives in (near) solitude in a post-zombie-vampire outbreak Manhattan, where he hunts the wild animals that now populate the city. Lawrence has established he can make a film set in a world vaguely resembling our own, so it's not hard to imagine Lawrence being able to make the leap to Panem.

He's Done Romance
Granted, it wasn't great romance, but it counts. "Water for Elephants" was also based on a best-selling novel and could come in handy in dealing with the amped-up love triangle among Katniss, Peeta and Gale.

Bennett Miller Wasn't Available
The Playlist originally reported that the race for the director's position came down to two directors, Lawrence and Bennett Miller. The "Moneyball" director was clearly the more distinguished of the two, but he had spent the last few years developing "Foxcatcher," a true-life story about the heir to the DuPont fortune who murdered an Olympic wrestler. In the past few months, Miller has seen "Foxcatcher" finally come together, adding Channing Tatum, Steve Carell and, just recently, Mark Ruffalo to the cast. If Miller would have signed on to direct "Catching Fire," he would have had to further delay "Foxcatcher" just after getting development off the ground.

Mary J. Blige blasted for Burger King ad

Getty Images

By Courtney Garcia, TODAY.com contributor

A Burger King commercial featuring Mary J. Blige?singing about chicken was pulled from company's YouTube channel Tuesday, though the company denied the action was due to heavy criticism.

The company said the ad was pulled?due to ?licensing issues,? but did not specify what those issues were. The company said it hoped to have the Blige ads back soon, but wouldn't say if they would be edited, the Associated Press reported.

The commercial features Blige standing?on top of a table?at the fast-food chain, microphone in hand, singing about the franchise?s crispy chicken wrap. (As of press time, you could still watch?the ad?at Gawker.)

David Beckham, Jay Leno, Salma Hayek and others also appear?in new?Burger King ads selling what the company calls a healthier menu. The Blige ad was criticized for invoking the stereotype involving African-Americans and chicken as well as the fact that Blige's?ode to chicken is sung to the tune of her song "Don't Mind," which may indeed be the cause of the "licensing issues" mentioned by the company.

?You still have so much more to contribute to the arts and entertainment game that there was no reason for you to stoop to stereotypes," Renay Alize wrote to Blige in a post at Madame Noire. ?"And I know what you?re thinking, everybody across the world loves chicken. It?s true, most people get down with the poultry; but as a black woman, singing passionately about chicken is?not?the move!?

Rich Juzwiak at Gawker?wrote that?mocking of the ad was "approaching meme levels," but pointed out?that actress Octavia Spencer wasn't criticized for?rhapsodizing about cooking chicken in the hit movie "The Help." Juzwiak also wrote, "if the issue is with Blige selling out, well, that's been happening for years," pointing out that the singer has sold fragrances on the QVC shopping channel in the past.

Marketing consultant Steve Stoute, who has worked closely with Blige, tweeted, ?The issue is the burger king commercial is that these agencies visit culture and then do work that is so inauthentic it's embarrassing."

But some find merit in the controversy.

?The Burger King spot ? blasphemous as many thought it was ? did something her recent career moves haven?t been able to do: They got people talking about Mary J. Blige again,? journalist Adam Graham?wrote in?The Detroit News. ?And if fans debate that she?s above doing fast food ads, maybe it leads to a renewed appreciation of her talents and what she should stand for, which in the end isn?t all that bad.?

Representatives of Blige have yet to comment on the matter.

Do you think the ad was a bad idea? Vote in our poll, and tell us on Facebook.

What do you think of the Mary J. Blige Burger King chicken ad?
